Individual Assignment: Analyzing Messages
Resource: University of Phoenix Material: Appendix A
Select three business-related messages you have sent or received.
Analyze these messages using the communication process. The analysis should include the following:

Descritions of the purpose, sender, receiver, message, environment, technology, noise, and feedback
Explanations of whether the message and technology were appropriate given the environment and purpose

Respond to one of these messages. Use direct, effective writing techniques.
Explain how the content, media, and technology of the feedback are appropriate for the purpose and audience.
Compose a 1,050- to 1,400-word paper that includes your messages, analyses, response, and rationale.
Format your paper according to APA standards.

I will upload the three emails that need to be disected.

Write a 700-1050-word paper examining a new technology for communication (i.e., Electronic medical records, voice recognition, etc.) and how it is impacting communication in healthcare. Consider how efficient and effective communication is with this technology, advantages and disadvantages, impact on consumers, and financial impact on organizations both long and short term. Identify any technological improvements that could still be made in the future with this new technology and why. Make recommendations. Utilize a minimum of two research sources, with one from UOP Library and other from rEsource to support your claims.

The purpose of the Telecommunications and Technology Analysis assignment is to examine the elements that drive successful technology and telecommunications integration and planning for an organization. Management needs to prioritize and evaluate technology used by the organization in day-to-day operations to identify which processes are critical to the organization's ability to conduct operations and which processes can be put on hold during an emergency. Scrambling to deal with technology issues once a disaster has hit is guaranteed to cost an organization.

Analyze your selected organization in regard to their telecommunications and technology preparedness. In your Telecommunications and Technology Analysis paper:

Identify the primary and secondary telecommunications and technology systems and components for the organization.
Evaluate the impact if some of these systems or components were not available to an organization.
Analyze the organization's telecommunications and technology preparedness if it were affected by one of the threats identified in the Risk and Vulnerability Analysis assignment.
Analyze strategies, methodologies, and research in business continuity planning management to identify best practices regarding telecommunications and technology.
Articulate the importance of telecommunications and technology for responding to an incident or disaster.
Outline the response steps and procedures to bring critical telecommunications and technology systems online if a disaster occurred.
Recommend work-around procedures that should be developed to allow for more vitality of the organization.

Your paper should be approximately three pages and contain five references. Submit your Telecommunications and Technology Analysis paper to the assignment area.

Do not FAX

Define a thesis on technology and some aspect of gender, ethnicity, equality, access, regionalism, or democracy in American culture only and write an argumentative research paper to support it. Do not write about the Internet. Factual statemenets must be supported by an outside source and must be accompanied by a citation. About 20-30 citations are expected. Some possible topics include: How does gender, socioeconomic status, ethnicity, or physical ability contribute to access of technology, and what are the cultural and social implications in America? Are technologies defined to appeal to a specific socioeconomic group, gender, or ethnicity in America?

http://gizmodo.com/
http://www.wirelesswatch.jp/index.php
http://news.zdnet.com/
http://www.networkworld.com/
http://www.podtech.net/?cat=45

Review each of these sites in search of what seem to be the seven (plus or minus two) most significant emerging technologies under discussion across these information sources. This will entail some analysis on your part, recognizing that different sources and different analysts may describe the same things in different terms or different things in the same terms. You may also wish to consult the background information, and any other sources including other web sites that seem to be helpful to you in terms of highlighting the most important technological developments. If you have questions about technical issues, as we said earlier, please consult the technical references provided or contact your instructors. It is important that you report the technology correctly, so be sure you understand what you're saying and don't just repeat what somebody else says.

For each of the seven (plus or minus two) technologies that you identify as being most important, please explain what it is, what it does, why you think it's important and what you think its applications and implications will be for individuals and organizations, and what you see as the major barriers to its rapid and widespread deployment. When you've finished summarizing the technologies in question, please conclude your paper (approximately 5 to 7 pages in length) with a paragraph or two outlining your overall expectations for technological change over the next few years and your evaluation of its prospective effects.

In this paper, as in the others for this course, there'll be a premium on clear explanation, careful citation of sources for information, evidence of evaluation of information based on more than cursory examination, and evidence of comprehension of both technical and social issues.

Reference

George A. Miller's great little paper, The Magical Number Seven, plus or minus two: Some Limits on Our Capacity for Processing Information, originally published in The Psychological Review, 1956, vol. 63, pp. 81-97. It appears that seven (plus or minus two) is pretty much the limit to how many things the human mind can juggle all at once. Faced with more, we tend to collapse our categories; faced with less, we tend to expand our distinctions. So seven (plus or minus two) seems to be a reasonable number of possibilities for you to consider. If you get a chance to read this paper, you'll find it most interesting and helpful, though it's not part of the required readings for this course.

Over the past six weeks, you have learned about several disabilities and how they impact a student?s learning experience. For the final project, you will be asked to respond to several case studies. Each of these case studies involves a specific disability and a unique set of issues for each of the identified students. Your assignment is to respond uniquely to each of the scenarios. Your responses should include the following elements:

Identification of the specific academic/behavioral issues that could be addressed through assistive technology
Identification of at least three assistive technologies that will address the academic/behavioral needs of each student
An overview of how each of the identified assistive technologies will be implemented for the student.
A discussion of anticipated results based upon the use of the assistive technologies for each of the case studies.
Responses must be supported with evidence from the text and at least two additional scholarly resources.

Case Study #1
Emily is a five-year-old female student who is visually impaired. Emily has low vision and has some independence. She is able to see letters and numbers with amplification. In the past, Emily has been enrolled in a Head Start class with typical peers. Emily experienced great success in her preschool classroom. She had access to assistive technology that assisted her in participating in most activities within the class. Emily will be starting kindergarten in the fall. She will be in a general education class with typical peers. Emily?s parents, and her IEP team, expect her to be fully included in most activities. Please describe assistive technologies that will allow Emily to have access to grade level content and to participate with her peers in the classroom.

Case Study #2
David is a third-grade student who has been identified as having a specific learning disability in the areas of reading and written language. During David?s last formal assessment, he was identified as reading two years below grade level. Through the assessment process it was discovered that he had particular difficulty with word identification and comprehension. Also, David refuses to write. When given classroom writing prompts, David will often write only one sentence. Interestingly, when given the opportunity to verbally respond to the prompt, his answers are comprehensive and meet grade level standards for content. Please identify several assistive technologies that may support David in reading and writing.

Case Study #3
Michael is a ten-year-old boy who has a diagnosis of autism. He has little language and will often act out when he does not get what he wants. His behavior includes throwing items, hitting, and biting. His IEP identifies the use of tangibles and the computer as a way to reinforce appropriate behavior. Michael?s teacher is looking for ways to increase his communication and to motivate him to behave appropriately in class. Please identify assistive technologies that can support Michael in class.

Case Study #4
Holly is a sixteen-year-old female student in the eleventh grade. Holly suffers from cerebral palsy and attends school through a combination of online and physical campus. Holly is currently enrolled in English, math, social studies, and several electives. She is close to grade level in all subject areas. Holly has a desire to attend college after high school. Please describe the types of assistive technology that can be used to provide her with access in the online environment. Also, what types of technology can be used to support Holly in her transition to college?

COMM/470 - Communicating in the Virtual Workplace

Analyzing Messages

Select three business-related messages you have sent or received.

Analyze these messages using the communication process. The analysis should
include the following:

Descriptions of the purpose, sender, receiver, message, environment, technology, noise, and feedback

A Basic Communications Model

The Basic Communications Model is the starting point for analyzing the communications process in terms of the intent of the sender, the needs of the receiver, and the elements of the communications environment.

Use the model as your starting point when analyzing messages in your assignments.

The communications model above shows the basic components present in a simple two-way exchange of information. Every communication, whether it is real-time, such as with a face-to-face meeting or a telephone conversation, or asynchronous, as with e-mail and fax, involves the following:

The environment in which the communication takes place

A sender or encoder who starts with a purpose

A message created to accomplish the purpose through the following:

Content, or the words and images

Media, or the format in which the content is presented, such as audio, text, video, or multimedia

Technology, which is made up of the following:

Encoding and presentation tools

Channels, or data networks appropriate to that technology

Noise, which is anything that reduces the likelihood of the message being interpreted the way the sender intended

A receiver or decoder who interprets the message

A feedback message that reverses the process

Note. A more advanced communication model would consider multiple parties, the different types of each component, and the perceptual filtering of a message done by both the sender and receiver?the characteristics, thoughts, and emotions of all parties that contribute to the message?s formation and interpretation.

In this module, the comment was made that norms are implicit, and tend to develop over time. However, it was also observed that virtual teams can not afford the luxury of such a passive process, and need to take proactive steps to establish explicit norms.

Case Expectations

In this case, you are asked to consider ways a virtual team can explicitly establish communication and task norms that support high performance. The following reading provides some additional ideas for how a co-located team could an engage in norm-setting. You should model your action plan for virtual teams after this type of analysis.

English Class Outcome
PAGES 2 WORDS 536

I need a two page paper using the information below stating how learning statements were learned and applied in the class and future day to day use. Cannot use pronouns or proper nouns reffering to self (i.e., I, me, names).
Must have two spaces after periods.
Outcome 1

Demonstrate effective communication skills.

Characteristics:

? Making good use of the English language in the presentation of business and management topics

? Effectively communicating grasp of business and management topics

? Identifying how the presentation was appropriately adapted to the audience

? Being organized and concise in written communication

Learning Statements:

? I have expanded my vocabulary to include standard practical and theoretical business concepts and I have increased my proficiency with digital technology communications media. I have learned how to coordinate my vocabulary, language, and persuasion efforts to specific audiences depending on whether they are laypeople, professionals, colleagues, or strangers. This skill is extremely important within the military, in particular, because communications that are standard among service members are often incomprehensible to civilians and because civilian communications may be too imprecise to convey the minimum necessary information and distinctions typically communicated best through highly specialized terminology.

? I have improved my ability to use email and other forms of technology to communicate in a professional manner. That also includes a greater understanding of the manner in which different communications media typically require the communicator to consider how various communications efforts might be interpreted depending on the type of communications media involved.

? I have expanded my vocabulary to allow me to understand, express, and communicate business-related concepts on both a practical and theoretical level. That has enabled me to process complex information in reading materials, to summarize them accurately to make use of them in subsequent discussions, and to write about them intelligently. This is important because much of the value of our conceptual understanding is lost unless we are able to communicate those concepts effectively to others. As a result, I am now better able to express in written form what I can express comfortably in verbal communications.

? I have learned how to tailor my language and persuasive strategies to different audiences (lay versus professional, colleagues versus strangers). That now allows me to discuss the same concepts, including complex or highly-technical ideas with very different audiences without confusing laypeople or wasting the time of more sophisticated audiences. That includes learning how to use the outline process to improve my public speaking and my written assignments. In that respect, I have learned to compose different types of outlines depending on how well my audience knows the subject of the communications. Typically, lay audiences require more extensive introductory sections than expert audiences.

The impact of technology on customers in regard to the following:

Groupware applications are specifically designed to allow a number of different individuals to access common data, obligations, and other resources in pursuit of common tasks and goals. Usually these applications are deployed only within an organization, although sometimes individuals from outside the organization are also given access. It is clear that the process of implementing groupware is rather more complicated than just buying software and installing it on a number of machines; using groupware turns out to be a social problem far more than it is a technical problem.

You can start reading about groupware in this chapter:

http://dspace.fsktm.um.edu.my/xmlui/bitstream/handle/1812/133/7-%20CHAPTER%202.pdf?sequence=7

These two articles describe some of the complexities of getting groupware used by a real group:
Bridget N. O'Connor (1999) A Groupware-based Peer Review Process: An Exploratory Case Study. Informing Science 2(1)

http://inform.nu/Articles/Vol2/v2n1index.htm

Strazewski, Len (2004) Technology Choices. Rough Notes, July http://www.findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_qa3615/is_200407/ai_n9410384#continue

There are also further references in the background information, including a couple of presentations that you may find useful in setting a context for this case. You may also wish to search for some additional information on your own.

Expectations:

Prepare a short paper (2+ pages) on the topic:

"Would implementing groupware in our organization be more trouble than it would be worth?

As you prepare your paper, you'll probably want to think about the kind of work that you do, the kind of work that your colleagues do, and what you know from the readings about information processing systems in general and what kinds of work groupware is best at supporting. You'll probably also want to think about how much trouble it is to change things in your organization in any event, about the kind of supervisory climate and environment you work in, about the kind of resources you have available to you, and about the kinds of demands being made upon you for day-to-day performance. The readings are to give you some information about how other people have dealt with groupware; it's up to you to apply this information to your own settings and come to some conclusions.

This is a pretty open-ended assignment, but we have faith that by now that you are well qualified to tackle it. We understand that groupware can be many different things and we trust that you can figure out the kinds of groupware that your organization might consider. Please note that we're not asking for any confidential or sensitive information about your organization, its people, or what it does -- if there are any details you feel uncomfortable talking about, please disguise or omit them. We are just interested in in your careful reflection on learning from the experience of others and extending that learning to your own situation. We do realize that you may be in a relatively lower-level function and not in a position to make decisions about groupware or anything of the sort. That shouldn't be a barrier to your thinking about what to do if you were in charge; after all, that's why you're in school in the first place -- to become in charge, right?

If you have any questions or concerns about this assignment, please contact your professor. Otherwise, we look forward to seeing what you determine about groupware implementation.
