How is the research described in your chosen article an example of social psychology?

Social psychology is often seen as the study of how people's feelings, outlooks, and behaviors are influenced by the definite, likely, or indirect presence of others. In this study the authors believe that people think that they communicate with people who are close to them better than they do with strangers. This is an example of social psychology because they are looking at how the behavior of communication is influenced by friends or strangers.

What was the study's main hypothesis? Explain (i.e., tell me more than yes/no) whether or not it was supported.

The researchers hypothesis was that people take part in active observation of strangers' different viewpoints because they know they have to, but that they let down their guard and rely more on their own viewpoint when they communicate with a friend. They proposed that closeness may now and then lead people to misjudge how well they can communicate. The author's hypothesis was supported due to the fact that they identified several other studies consistent with their hypothesis. One study looked at the fact that another is there with a person and can see what the other person see augmented individuals' egocentric tendency to misjudge the transparency of their personal distinctiveness. In another study, groups that finished a friendship-building exercise overvalued their capability to engage in secret communication more than did groups of strangers.

3. Explain whether the study relied on self-report, technology, or observations in order to measure something about the participants.

This study relied on observations in order to measure the way that people communicated with each other. The first study looked at whether listeners are more egocentric when they communicate with a friend than a stranger. Studies 2a and 2b then tested speakers' capability to measure the success of their communication with friends as opposed to strangers. Participants tried to communicate meticulous meanings with vague phrases, and then anticipated how well a friend and strangers comprehended what they meant. All of these studies were observed by the researchers and results were calculated and reported.

4. Explain whether the study was descriptive, correlational, or experimental.

This study was experimental in nature. Experimental research is directed by hypotheses or several hypotheses that states a predictable relationship between two or more variables. An experiment is carried out to sustain or disconfirm this experimental hypothesis. In this study the researchers had a hypothesis that they tested using experimental groups in which they examined people and their behaviors. This was not descriptive research because it did not examine any statistics in regards to this group of people. It was not correlational research because it did not examine a statistical relationship between two or more variables.

5. Consider the ethics of the research. All studies must have passed some form of institutional review prior to being conducted, but what kinds of ethical concerns did the researchers have and what did they do to address those concerns specifically?
