The book reinforces my belief that leadership is a relationship and that the quality of leadership is dependent on the quality of the relationship between the leader and his/her followers. As shown in this book, the major component towards exemplary leadership is establishing good relationships between the leader and his/her followers. The exemplary leadership practices provided in the book are hinged on the relationship between the leader and his/her followers or subordinates. In my opinion, modern leaders should focus on establishing good relationships with their followers or subordinates while adopting suitable leadership practices in order to be effective in their undertakings. Therefore, this book provides insights that can be applied by leaders across different organizational settings and environment.
As an educational leader, this book has challenged my view of leadership and the essential leadership practices. I will utilize the insights obtained from the book towards creating collaborative learning environment in which the different stakeholders in the learning organization work together towards the achievement of desired organizational goals and objectives. In this case, I will utilize the idea that leadership is a relationship to enhance teacher collaboration as well as collaboration between educators and the other stakeholders in the school. I will encourage teachers to work together and help each other to designing teaching strategies and practices that improve learning outcomes. Moreover, I will encourage them to develop good relations with learners to help ensure that they are attentive to their needs and design classroom instruction to meet these needs. During this process, I will also apply the five practices of exemplary leadership, which will help teachers to achieve their personal best with respect to learning outcomes and objectives.
In conclusion, The Leadership Challenge: How to Make Extraordinary Things Happen in Organizations is a book that provides insights on exemplary leadership practices that can be applied across different organizational settings including the educational setting. The main idea in this book is that leadership is a relationship and that the establishment of good relationships between leaders and their followers is the foundation for exemplary leadership. As an educational leader, I will apply the concepts in this book through creating a collaborative learning environment in which the various stakeholders work together to achieve mutual goals.
