Talent Management - A Critic In today's business environment, there exists cutthroat competition for talent as well as need for strategic business growth. The contemporary environment for business calls for strategic measures to recruit, manage and retain an effective and talented workforce. This creates the need human resource management through a well formulated planning strategy (Budhwar & Mellahi, 2016). According to Budhwar and Mellahi (2016), human resource planning entails, coming up with measure of identifying talent among the workforce and managing these talents in a strategic manner.

This paper presents a critical on strategic talent management by Collings and Mellahi (2009). Summary of the Article The authors identify the scope of talent management by highlighting the different components of human resource management and their contribution to a sustainable organization. In the article it is evidenced there is no clear and concise definition of talent in the field of human resource management and planning Collings and Mellahi (2009).

This according to the authors limits the potential of human resource management to articulate strategies of talent management within an organization Collings and Mellahi (2009). From this article, a definition of talent is given and a theoretical model for strategic talent management is developed. By reviewing existing research and methodologies of human resource management, the authors were able to identify and avail a concrete definition of talent. From these definition and analysis a theoretical model of identifying, developing, managing and utilizing talent is given.

The article's theoretical model encompasses identification of talent positions, development of a talent pool, creation of unique human resource architect and assessing outcomes. The theoretical model presents articulate measures for an organization to identify their needs through interrogations on their objectives and linking them to the talent needs. From the article the organization is well equipped to determine the precise formulation of their workforce and how to identify the ideal workforce Collings and Mellahi (2009).

Knowledge to the human resource practice is available and solution to problems in defining the scope of talent management is earned. The article also devises measures to approach human resource management through a universal setting applicable across the broad spectrum. The article identifies two problems in human resource management and comes with solution. The concise definition of the scope of talent management and creation of a model for talent management resolves major difficulties in human resource planning and management.

Merits and Demerits It is notable that the authors did not give a direction of focus for future research. From their findings and theoretical model, more interests are bound to be elicited in the practice of human resource management. The article however, does not give a presentation on the challenges encountered in the undertaking.
