Nature refers to what is commonly called genetics today; nurture, conversely, is what an individual acquires from the environment. Many scholars have taken one side or the other, but only recently have scientists had the ability to truly assess which position is more well-supported.

One facet of this study — that of intelligence — may be the single greatest issue of discussion among scientists and lay persons alike. Intelligence as a product of nature has taken a beating in the public arena due to publications such as The Bell Curve. Many did not appreciate the book's findings, especially those drawn along racial lines, and so it was largely dismissed. Scientists have also identified numerous areas where the authors relied on faulty evidence. This essay, however, is concerned with what nature vs. nurture truly means, how the debate relates to intelligence, and an evaluation of the competing evidence on both sides of the argument.

Defining Key Terms and Methodological Concepts

Some terms must first be defined before this investigation can begin. Much of the evidence examined relates to twin studies performed with what are typically referred to as identical and fraternal twins. In these scientific studies, identical twins are termed monozygotic (MZ), meaning they originate from a single egg, and fraternal twins are termed dizygotic (DZ), meaning they originate from different eggs (Mackintosh, 1998, p. 71). Throughout this paper, identical twins will be referred to as MZ and fraternal twins as DZ. Another term common to many studies is correlation. Eric Gander (2003, p. 83) defines this term as "the degree of similarity between two variables."

Psychology, generally considered the study of behavior rather than the specific physiology of the brain, seeks to understand whether an individual inherits mental traits from their parents before birth or develops them afterward. The question of genetics vs. environment is paramount in understanding the theoretical positions of many researchers, including the noted behaviorist John B. Watson. Many scientists have engaged with the role of intelligence at the center of the nature vs. nurture debate.

The Genetic Argument for Intelligence

The genetics argument holds that a child will derive a large portion of their intellectual makeup from heritability — meaning that intelligence will vary little when compared to the intelligence of one's parents. Nurture, on the other hand, asserts that traits related to intelligence are largely acquired after birth. In this view, the environment in which one lives and develops understanding has a greater effect than does the family into which the individual was born. Intelligence is at the core of the nature vs. nurture debate because it is a trait that people can anecdotally observe being passed from one person to another, much like eye color, height, or weight. Studies involving both DZ and MZ twins — some raised with their biological parents and some raised apart — have shed light on which side of the argument is better supported.

Mackintosh (1998) found that intelligence between identical twins correlates at .86; between fraternal twins the correlation is .60; between siblings it is .47; and between unrelated children the correlation is .34 (p. 71). This is reinforced by a study reporting that "an IQ study of 159 pairs of identical twins raised apart revealed a correlation of 75% while identical twins reared together had a higher correlation of 86%" (Schein and Bernstein, 2008, p. 56). While the second study does reveal a difference between MZ twins raised together and those raised apart, the correlational gap between MZ twins and DZ twins remains significant (.75 vs. .60).
