What is Authority?

Authority is one of the most broadly examined concepts across the humanities and social sciences, appearing in courses ranging from political science and sociology to legal studies, literature, and philosophy. It raises fundamental questions about where power comes from, how it is granted or taken, and what obligations it creates for individuals and groups. Works like The Crucible and One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest give literary dimension to these questions, while legal frameworks around common law and judge-made law ground them in institutional practice. Historical episodes — such as Pope Boniface VIII's claims to papal supremacy and James Otis's challenge to the Writs of Assistance — show how disputes over authority have shaped societies across centuries.

Student papers on this topic approach authority from several distinct angles. Literary analyses examine how characters resist or submit to institutional power, often through close reading of conflict and consequence. Historical and political essays trace how authority has been organized, contested, or transferred across governments and religious institutions. Legal papers explore the relationship between different sources of law and who holds the right to interpret them. Psychology-oriented work, drawing on studies like the Stanford Prison Experiment, investigates how individuals behave when placed inside authority structures. Philosophical and epistemological papers question how authority claims are justified, including the nature of argument by authority itself.

A strong essay on authority needs a focused thesis about a specific form or exercise of power rather than treating the concept in the abstract. Evidence drawn from primary texts, legal cases, historical events, or documented social behavior tends to carry the most weight. The most common pitfall is conflating authority with raw power — a careful essay distinguishes between legitimate, institutionally recognized authority and coercive force, and explains why that distinction matters for the argument being made.

Separation of church and state in Roger Williams' The Bloody Tenet of Persecution
Roger Williams was a Puritan Separatist and Baptist, who founded the new colony of Rhode Island after his expulsion from Massachusetts. His views were quite radical and democratic by 17th Century standards, since he supported religious freedom for all individuals and strongly disapproved of state-supported religions and established churches of the kind that existed everywhere at the time. Although his own views were strictly Calvinist, and he regularly entered into religious disputes with supporters of other religions, Rhode Island did not use the power of the government to enforce religious conformity.

Faith and Reason Irreconcilable Faith and Reason
The challenge of reconciling reason to faith has been one that has dominated philosophy since thinking and oration became known as philosophy. The challenge is to address the idea that the thinking person can fundamentally believe that reason rules all production of truth and fact in combination with the fact that faith is not a sentiment of reason, i.e. one must simply believe that something (in the case of philosophy usually God) exists to define and defend faith. The challenge has been met by everyone from Augustine of Hippo during the medieval period of Western Philosophy to Friedrich Nietzsche, in modern times. This work will look at the varied arguments of the medieval philosophers in their attempt to reconcile faith with reason in an attempt to persuade the reader that no such reconciliation can be made, the concluding thesis being that regardless of the amount of thought and reason one puts into it faith cannot be reconciled with reason as reason dictates that one can see, touch, hear and conclude that something is as it is and faith dictates that one must begin with a universal, i.e. acceptance of that which one cannot see, touch, hear or reason into existence. Therefore this argument will be centered on the idea that reason and faith i.e. religion cannot coexist in a line of thought, regardless of the fact that they clearly coexist in the individual mind.

1857 Indian Rebellion Been Elusive to Characterize
The soldiers and the elected command of military leadership did not recognize the orders of BegamHazratMahal and as a result refused to attack British forces that were gathering outside the city. The looting and plundering along with denial of orders lead to a disaster for the rebels. The British forces faced individual action from rebel groups and even the ordinary citizen fought with courage and dignity instead of soldiers leading the way. The resistance faced by the British forces was also coming from the residents and commoners instead of a coordinated action form the military.
