What is Car?

The car as a subject of academic inquiry appears across a surprisingly wide range of disciplines, from business and marketing to criminal justice, environmental studies, and personal finance. Because vehicles are central to modern economic life, consumer culture, and public policy, courses in management, ethics, law, and social sciences frequently use car-related scenarios to ground abstract concepts in familiar, real-world situations. The topic invites students to think critically about how companies operate, how individuals make financial decisions, and how broader social forces shape the way vehicles are designed, advertised, and regulated.

The papers archived under this topic reflect a genuinely diverse set of approaches. Some take a business or case-study angle, examining companies like Enterprise Rent-A-Car or analyzing brand strategy and the cost decisions facing manufacturers. Others focus on consumer and financial issues, such as evaluating car loans and refinancing risks. Ethical and legal dimensions appear as well, with papers exploring criminal investigation scenarios involving vehicles, identity theft, and the conduct of drivers and officers in specific situations. A smaller cluster of papers treats advertising, gender representation, and environmental responsibility, showing how the car functions as a cultural and political object.

A strong essay on a car-related topic succeeds by establishing a clear, specific thesis rather than surveying the subject too broadly. Evidence drawn from financial data, company policy, legal standards, or documented case situations tends to carry the most weight, depending on the angle chosen. The most common pitfall is treating the vehicle itself as the subject when the real argument concerns a human decision, an ethical situation, or a market dynamic — keeping that distinction clear will sharpen any essay considerably.

How fashionable consumption drives unsustainable consumerism in America
It can be hard to pinpoint a definition for consumerism. However, generally the term is used to describe people that conflate wants and needs. For example, some people might identify the new iPhone as a want that would be nice to have. While others actually would describe this as something "need" in order to be happy; to the extent that they will actually wait in line for hours on end to be the first to purchase the new iContraption. Consumerism can also include the concept of fashionable consumption. Fashionable consumption goes beyond what an individual actually needs in terms of their physical well-being.

C. Vann Woodward's Strange Career thesis on Jim Crow segregation
Vann Woodward and Jim Crow Evaluating the impact of Reconstruction social policy on blacks is more controversial due to the issue of segregation. Until the publication of C. Vann Woodward Strange Career of Jim Crow in 1955, the traditional view was that after the gains of Reconstruction, Conservative Democrats clamped down on the blacks by instituting an extensive system of segregation and disfranchisement (Woodward, 1974). Woodward, however, argued that there was a period of fluidity in race relations between the end of Reconstruction and the 1890s. Woodward concentrated on de jure segregation rather than de facto segregation, in part because he was influenced by the Brown v. Board of Education decision ( 1954) and the growing agitation over desegregation. In still another example of current affairs influencing a historian's viewpoint, Woodward wanted to show that segregation was not an irrevocable folkway of Southern life, but actually a rather recent innovation. Despite attacks from a number of scholars who pointed to the existence of segregation during the antebellum period in both the North and South, and, most pointedly, even during Reconstruction, Woodward's view was widely accepted. Woodward's critics were limited by their own desire to make history conform to their expectations and as a result simply searched for proof that segregation represented the norm in Southern life (Dailey, et al 2000). As a result their work lacked a dynamic approach which would emphasize process (Rabinowitz, 1978).
