What is Classification Essays (Examples)?

If you have been assigned a classification essay, you probably think that it is one of the most boring academic assignments possible.  After all, how can you make an essay that basically describes categories interesting for you as a writer or for the intended readers?

Well, unfortunately, you are right.  Classification essays are a relatively boring type of academic writing.  They simply involve organizing things into categories, then giving examples of things that fit into the category.  They are not fascinating to write or to read, but they can be really important in demonstrating full knowledge of a topic or helping the audience understand the difference between similar things that belong in different categories.

One of the upsides of writing a classification essay is that they are relatively easy to write.  The structure is simple.  In your introduction, you introduce the broader topic and briefly describe the categories.  Each of your supporting paragraphs will focus in-depth on one of the categories and provide examples of items that fall into the categories.

Clarity is probably the most important part of a classification essay.  Therefore, you want to use consistent criteria to define each of your categories, and then give examples of things that clearly fall into those categories.  If there are exceptions to your classification rules, which is always a possibility, do not address them until after you have established your categories.

Our examples can provide you with a great template to follow in writing your own classification essays.  Feel free to browse them for ideas and inspiration for your own writing!

Inventory management of raw materials and finished products
The raw materials, goods in process, and finished products represent different forms of inventory. A competent management of inventory also aims at controlling the costs that are associated with the inventory from the perspective of total value of the commodities Minimization of inventory investment while still meeting the functional requirements is the primary goal of inventory. The analysis is a management tool for categorizing inventory. ABC analysis provides the materials manager with opportunity to exercise selective control. Gerhard Mueller's deductive classification of international accounting approaches
Two major distinctions exist in classifying accounting approaches: that of the inductive and deductive method. In the deductive method, the classification system proceeds from the general to the specific. In the inductive method, the classification system proceeds from the specific to the general. Both are problematic in today's volatile regulatory and economic environment.

Computer-based assessment for aviation personnel selection and classification
Introduction Emerging models of human information processing are, in any case, likely to find increasing application in the selection, classification, and training of aviation personnel. The dynamic nature of these models requires similarly dynamic measurement capabilities. These capabilities are now coming inexpensively and readily available through the use of computer-based assessment which can measure aspects of human cognitive processes that heretofore were inaccessible given the military's need for inexpensive, standard, procedures to assess hundreds of people in a single day by a single examiner. Development of these capabilities may represent as important a milestone in selection and classification as did the work of the Vineland Committee to produce the Army Alpha Test. These are currently being pursued by U.S. Air Force laboratory personnel who are performing leading research in this area (Ortiz, 2008).
