Combat is a significant risk factor for posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and by extension, substance abuse. While research studies continue to find support for this relationship, recent findings suggest this relationship is weak at best. The dominant risk factors are the same for military and civilian populations, which include youth and mental illness.
