What is Diversity?

Diversity is a broad and consequential topic that appears across disciplines including sociology, business management, education, public administration, psychology, and law. Students write about it because it sits at the intersection of social justice, organizational effectiveness, and cultural understanding, making it relevant to both theoretical and applied coursework. Academic interest in diversity is driven by questions about how race, ethnicity, gender, culture, and lived experience shape institutions, relationships, and outcomes in ways that demand critical examination.

The papers archived under this topic reflect a wide range of approaches. Many take an organizational or managerial angle, examining how companies and public agencies can effectively manage diversity in the workplace and within human resources frameworks. Others are institutional, focusing on diversity in law enforcement or higher education settings, including how multicultural classrooms can be structured through intercultural communication planning. Some papers engage with historical and cultural analysis, including race and ethnicity as social constructs, while others address clinical and counseling contexts such as psychotherapy with diverse populations or supporting counselors who work across cultural lines.

A strong essay on diversity requires a clearly scoped thesis that moves beyond simply advocating for inclusion toward analyzing how diversity functions within a specific context — an organization, a policy, a profession, or a cultural setting. Evidence drawn from case studies, demographic research, institutional policy, or cultural frameworks tends to carry the most weight. One common pitfall is treating diversity as a single unified concept rather than acknowledging that race, gender, religion, and culture each raise distinct challenges that require targeted, precise analysis.

Rhetorical analysis of Paul Keating's Redfern Park speech
Paul Keating's speech at Redfern Park in Sydney is a brilliant example of rhetoric and experienced political spin. The speech is well-executed and shows solid use of fallacy and the three modes of persuasion: pathos, ethos, and logos. The use of rhetorical devices is akin an expert sushi chef using his knives—rapid, precise, stunning. The use of epiphora, particularly in tricolon format, lends both cadence and emphasis. The word imagine is used in this manner and in epiphora convention, as the word is repeated in successive clauses. The connotation of the word confident is made more powerful by its proximity to the word imagine. Further, antithesis is threaded throughout by deliberate distinctions between non-Aboriginal and indigenous Australians, and presumably to use the favored terms of reference for every member of the audience—as it is a political speech. There is a great divide between the experiences and treatment of the privileged primarily white non-indigenous citizens of Australia and the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island people. Keating does not shy away from this fact. Indeed, he even underscores the confounding problem by reminding the now privileged Australians that they were not always so, through his use of erotema. He asks again and again, if Australia did not open its doors and extend its hands to the dispossessed people of Ireland, Britain, Europe, and Asia.
