What is Duty?

Duty is a foundational concept in ethics, law, political theory, and organizational management, which is why students across a wide range of disciplines are regularly asked to write about it. It appears in philosophy courses examining moral obligation, in criminal justice programs analyzing the responsibilities of government employees and organizations, in legal studies addressing negligent tort and standards of care, and in political science courses debating whether governments bear a responsibility to help those in need. The concept is academically rich because it sits at the intersection of rights and obligations, forcing writers to consider what individuals, institutions, and officials owe to one another and under what circumstances those obligations can be enforced or neglected.

Student papers on this topic take several distinct approaches. Some focus on legal and institutional frameworks, examining constitutional rights implicated for criminal justice employees, the conditions under which defense witness immunity applies, or the elements of negligent tort under established guidelines. Others take a historical or case-study approach, such as analyzing the federal government's response to Hurricane aftermath or reviewing H. R. McMaster's account of military leadership failures in Dereliction of Duty. Philosophical and reflective angles also appear, including discussions of Socrates' trial as a test of civic duty and personal conscience.

A strong essay on duty requires a clearly scoped thesis that specifies whose duty is being examined, toward whom, and in what context. Evidence drawn from legal precedent, policy analysis, or well-documented historical cases tends to carry the most weight. The most common pitfall is treating duty as self-evident — assuming readers agree on what an obligation entails without defining the standard of care, legal framework, or ethical theory grounding the argument.

Ethics and Legal Considerations of Genetic Testing
The Ethics and Legal Considerations of Genetic Testing Genetic testing is ideally performed for many valid clinical purposes. The sheer breadth and depth of genetic testing makes a sweeping ethical/moral judgment about genetic testing impossible; rather, the healthcare professional will have to apply his/her ethical education and experience on a case-by-case basis. Singapore currently has no law governing genetic testing per se. In 2000, the Singapore Cabinet appointed "The Bioethics Advisory Committee" to review genetic testing practices and make recommendations. The Committee prepared an exhaustive report with 24 ethical/moral recommendations. Aside from the herculean efforts of Singapore's Bioethics Advisory Committee, several philosophical/ethical theories can be applied to genetic testing. Kant's Mills' and Gilligan's theories all seem too subjective to adequately judge Genetic Testing. However, Ross' 4 Prima Faci principles are commonly used in conjunction with the Code of Professional Conduct to adjudge ethical considerations of Genetic Testing on a case-by-case basis.

Rachel Carson's Silent Spring: Lessons on Pesticides and Environment
Literature – Silent Spring by Rachel Carson In 1962, American culture contained a chemical industry that was greedy, wealthy and powerful, government officials who were easily duped and willing to use propaganda and force to wage chemical campaigns, and a public that was ignorant and gullible. Enter Rachel Carson, whose Silent Spring is considered by some to be the start of a revolution. Carson's descriptions of the all-out chemical warfare waged against the gypsy moth and the fire ant in 1950's America show the severe damage caused by 1950's American culture. In addition, Carson's description of the pervasiveness and danger of poisons in such mundane places as our kitchens and gardens served as a wake-up call that America has taken to heart.
