As the name implies, terrorism is an attempt to provoke fear and intimidation. Therefore, terrorist acts are intended to attract wide publicity and provoke public shock, outrage, and/or fear.

On January 20, 1942, at a location that was outside of Berlin called Wannsee, about 15 German men, every one of them who Nazi Party administrators and associates of the German government, met to deliberate what they named the "Final Solution of the Jewish Question." The person that was in charge of the whole thing was a man named SS General Reinhard Heydrich, the principal of the Reich Security Main Office and one of SS chief Heinrich Himmler's highest assistants.

There are a number of cultural conflicts that are found within these works by Danticat and Satrapi. The overall effects of these cultural clashes within both works is that those caught in the midst of them inherently lose some aspect of their lives. In many instances, it is also possible for people to lose their entire lives.

By comparing and contrasting Pablo Picasso's Guernica with Eugene Delacroix's Liberty Leading the People, one is better able to understand and appreciate how the violence and horror of war comes to be legitimized and even celebrated when viewed through the lens of nationalism and popular demand. Both paintings deal with the aftermath of internal military conflicts, and use strikingly similar imagery to portray this aftermath, but they take decidedly different approaches to their topic. While both paintings offer important insights into the public and private reactions to their respective topics, viewing them together forces one to reconsider the standards by which violence and war are legitimized and even celebrated.
