Ferdinand Tonnies' Gemeinschaft and Gesellschaft, or community and society, are two ways to view social relationships. Gemeinschaft is a sense of community where relationships form orhanically and naturally, while Gesellschaft are the artificial constructs of "society," such as orgainizations, businesses, etc.. When one compares Tonnies' theory and Charles Dickens' "Hard Times," one can see that Dickens' two social classes: wealthy and poor, seem to form the two types of social relationships described by Tonnies.
