What is Normative?

Normative inquiry appears across a wide range of academic disciplines, from political science and criminology to psychology, accounting, and education. At its core, a normative approach asks what ought to be the case — what standards, values, or rules should guide behavior, policy, or institutions — rather than simply describing what is. This makes it a productive framework for courses that require students to evaluate social structures, professional practices, or governmental decisions against some ethical or theoretical benchmark. Papers drawing on normative reasoning often engage with questions of justice, human rights, cultural relativism, and the proper role of institutions in shaping individual behavior.

The archived papers on this topic take a variety of approaches. Some are comparative, setting normative theory against positive or empirical frameworks — as seen in work contrasting normative and positive accounting theory. Others are applied, using needs assessment models or policy theory dimensions to evaluate real-world programs and decisions. Still others draw on sociological and psychological theories, including examinations of anomie, crime causation, and gerontology, to assess how normative standards shape individual and group outcomes. Educational settings, including debates over online versus traditional teaching, also appear as contexts where normative judgments about quality and access come into focus.

A strong essay on a normative topic requires a clearly scoped thesis that takes a defensible position rather than merely summarizing competing views. Evidence drawn from theoretical frameworks, empirical research, and policy analysis tends to carry the most weight. The most common pitfall is conflating normative and descriptive claims — asserting what people do when the argument requires explaining what they should do and why.

Self-efficacy and oppositional defiant disorder in adolescents
The diagnostic criteria for oppositional defiant disorder appear to still be evolving as its relation to other similar externalizing behaviors has been well established. The role of self-efficacy in the development and treatment of oppositional defiant disorder appears to be significant. Certainly researchers have demonstrated substantive levels of influence of self-efficacy on the motivation and choices that adolescents make with regard to academic preparation and future aspirations. A range of therapeutic strategies is available for the clinician, counselor, or therapist for addressing the disruptive and destructive problem behaviors associated with oppositional defiant disorder.

Corporate ethics codes and their effectiveness in practice
The essay is on business ethics. Both government and company have formulated policies to implement and maintain ethical behavior. The questions is whether these policies work and are kept. Many observers see a disassociation between the company requirements and actual company behavior. Others however perceive the intransigence and strictness of laws such as the SOX to be sufficient to keep the company in control. No company wants to be bankrupt or run into trouble with the government. Debate therefore varies between whether or not ethical codes can build a true corporate ethics.

Ethical considerations in patient access to experimental cancer drugs
Experimental drugs are being used in treating cancer and other life-threatening diseases in the hopes that effective cures and treatments can be identified. There are however, ethical questions relating to the use of experimental drugs and this work seeks to answer the question that asks whether patients should have access to experimental drugs and to answer why or why they should not have this access. While the ethical considerations in the use of experimental drugs appear to be an issue that can be reduced to black and white, the truth is that this is an issue with many gray and undefined areas regarding ethics and one that likely must be analyzed on a case-by-case basis in regards to the specifics of each case questioning the ethical use of an experimental drug because there are different experimental drugs at issue and clinical trials with different specifics in the research methods that serve to make the use of experimental drugs a practice that is greatly undefined and that would not fall within the ‘normative' ethical standards of society.
