What is Organizational Structures?

Organizational structures define how roles, responsibilities, and communication flow within a company or institution, making the topic central to business management, organizational behavior, and leadership courses. Students across disciplines—from healthcare administration to information technology project management—examine how structure shapes everything from daily operations to long-term strategy. The topic is academically rich because structure is never neutral: the way an organization arranges its parts directly influences culture, efficiency, and competitive advantage, which explains why frameworks like systems thinking and structural analysis appear frequently in coursework alongside real-world cases involving companies such as Zappos, Target Corporation, Nike, and General Electric.

The papers archived on this topic take several distinct approaches. Case-study analysis is especially common, with writers evaluating how specific companies design or redesign their structures to meet strategic goals. Some essays apply analytical frames—such as the structural frame or systems thinking—to assess performance and culture. Others take a change-management angle, asking whether organizational structure can shift quickly and what factors speed up or slow down that process. Applied contexts like healthcare settings, community policing, and IT project management also appear, showing how structural choices play out across very different institutional environments.

A strong essay on organizational structures needs a focused thesis that connects a specific structural type or design decision to a measurable or observable outcome, such as project implementation success or competitive positioning. Evidence drawn from named companies, industry-specific leadership practices, or established organizational models carries the most weight. A common pitfall is treating structure as a static chart rather than a dynamic system shaped by culture, strategy, and people—avoid describing structure in isolation from the broader organizational context it operates within.

Behavioral research in individual, group, and organizational behavior
In today's modern world, behavioral theory is one that is consistently studied and edited as it affects each and every individual who exists on the earth. While one's behavior in an individualized setting may significantly differ from their behavior in a group setting or an organizational setting, certain theories and research have existed and continue to evolve in order to understand why we as humans behave the way we do. In viewing the basic foundations of individual behavior, group behavior, and organizational behavior, as well as the current research that exists regarding each, one can better gauge what improvements and recommendations can be made in order for many different individuals to come together to achieve a desired and improved working environment. Additionally, in the context of the course at hand, one can understand which research and theories are most and least compatible with an overarching Christian worldview.

Critical consciousness and social change in digital media activism
Digital natives and emergent social change agents united over the Kony 2012 campaign in a manner that put a new spin on the concept of critical consciousness. While Paulo Freire and other critical theorists tend to focus primarily on the evolution of awareness of oppressed people, the new digital media appears to support revolution on both sides of the equation. In the discussion that follows, I examine how critical theory is being applied in the new digital media to address structural and cultural violence. I contend that the overlapping systems of power and equality, which are justified on the basis of class, wealth, gender, race, religion, and sexual orientation, have reached highs of exposure and vulnerability through the enhanced populist communication that is enabled by the new digital media. The Kony 2012 campaign, the Occupy Movement and the studies of American education by Jonathan Kozal will act as the touchstones of my argument. I begin the discussion with a brief exploration of the terms critical consciousness, critical pedagogy, structural violence, and cultural violence.
