What is Protest?

Protest is the act of organized or individual resistance against perceived injustice, inequality, or institutional power, and it sits at the intersection of political science, sociology, history, literature, and communication studies. Students across disciplines are asked to engage with it because it raises fundamental questions about civic life, power, and how change happens in a society. It appears in courses ranging from American history and social movements to ethics, cultural studies, and art history. The topic's academic appeal lies in its range: protest can be examined as political strategy, cultural expression, or moral argument, making it adaptable to almost any analytical framework.

The papers archived on this topic reflect a wide variety of approaches. Some take a historical angle, examining events like the Patriot Movement in the colonies or the 1992 Washington Heights and Rodney King solidarity riots to understand how public unrest shapes political outcomes. Others focus on cultural and artistic expression, analyzing protest through music, modern art, or the tradition of American protest literature. Still others take a policy or community focus, considering how institutions respond to dissent, including through frameworks like community policing. Ethical and economic dimensions also appear, particularly in work addressing Wall Street protests and questions of economic inequity.

A strong essay on protest grounds its thesis in a specific form, event, or context rather than treating the subject in the abstract. Evidence drawn from primary sources, historical records, or close textual analysis tends to carry the most weight. Writers should clearly establish the purpose and public impact of the protest they examine, connecting individual cases to broader social or political stakes. The most common pitfall is conflating description with analysis — summarizing what happened without arguing why it matters or what it reveals.

Economic Growth of Japan Cross
Economic Growth of Japan Introduction & Thesis Statement Japan boasts one of the strongest economies in the world. In terms of capacity, Japan's economy ranks third after the United States and China. Extensive emphasis on the technology, which acts as one of the strongest resources of the country, has thrust Japan into a world economic power. The emphasis on technology has helped Japan become one of the greatest automobile manufacturing countries. Although recently challenged by the emerging electronic and automobile technologies of Korea, Japan's highly successful electronics industry focuses on the cameras, computers, music and video-related products. International trade relations have contributed significantly to the development of the country's GDP. Japan's powerhouse economic engines – and its people – were seriously challenged in March 2011 by one of the most severe earthquakes – and tsunamis – experienced in Asia in many years. But although Japan has many government-related problems, including a struggling labor force, unemployment and disenfranchised youth, in the main Japan is bouncing back fairly well from that disaster. Thesis: Notwithstanding the calamitous 9.0 earthquake, followed by an extraordinarily destructive tsunami that wiped out entire towns and took the lives of 15,854 people (in addition, 3,155 are listed as missing) – and caused radiation from a nuclear plant to be leaked into the air and the sea – Japan is coming back strong. The people of Japan are well educated, proud and resilient, and based on the economic structure it has worked hard to develop since the end of WWII, and notwithstanding temporary problems with unemployment and cutbacks by the government of certain benefits for workers and welfare recipients, Japan has the capacity to continue uninterrupted as a world economic power.

Interview project methods and applications
My initial impressions of LA were refracted in different ways by the five interviews. At one time, a long time ago, according to Sandra, the teen counselor, Los Angeles was a different place where over the fence chatting was a norm and people congregated to share news and a hug. Today, teenagers and the younger generation as well as professionals and almost all citizens have become immured in a technological world that detaches them from the necessary support, hence, according to Sandra, teen counselor, depression has become more rampant. She sees drugs as a growing problem that will continue as long as technology and materialism rises as well as the gap between rich and poor. The gap between rich and poor was an ongoing problem. Also a counselor, but working in a very different part of the field and with a very different population, Malpede attempted to have the homeless recreate their unenviable situation through drama thus seeking relief and solution.
