What is Quality?

Quality is a broad, cross-disciplinary concept studied in business, healthcare, nursing, marketing, and organizational management courses. It encompasses the standards, processes, and outcomes that determine how well a product, service, or system meets defined expectations. In healthcare contexts, quality is closely tied to patient safety, culturally competent communication, and holistic care planning. In business settings, frameworks such as Total Quality Management — referenced directly in course materials like Oakland's TQM textbook — provide structured approaches for analyzing how organizations improve performance and reduce deficiencies across operations.

The papers archived on this topic reflect a wide range of analytical approaches. Healthcare-focused essays examine quality through patient-centered lenses, including nursing care plans for terminally ill patients, quality of life concerns for those with renal failure, and psychiatric nursing challenges such as bipolar disorder management. Business-oriented work tends toward case studies and simulations, drawing on examples like the Tanglewood case and buyer behavior analysis to evaluate organizational decision-making. Some essays address quality at the intersection of culture and care, exploring how cultural differences in healthcare settings affect outcomes and communication effectiveness.

A strong essay on quality requires a clearly scoped thesis that identifies a specific dimension — process, outcome, or standard — rather than treating quality as a vague ideal. Evidence drawn from clinical data, established management frameworks, or well-analyzed case studies carries the most weight. The most common pitfall is defining quality too broadly at the outset, which leads to unfocused analysis; anchoring the argument in a concrete setting, such as patient safety by care setting or consumer behavior in a regulated market, keeps the discussion grounded and persuasive.

Academic Argument on Faculty Perceptions of Student Disengagement in Online Learning
The emergence of technology has meant that the entire society is challenged every single day to accept something new in their lives on a regular basis. This is not to say that this is a bad thing, but the argument that can be put here is that whether society is ready as a whole to incorporate these new technological advancements in their day to day life. And it is exactly at this juncture that we face a critical issue. While there is no doubt that the mark of technology has been felt on every segment of our lives, no matter how trivial it may seem, the fact of the matter remains that there is currently a majority of people who are not equipped to handle this new intrusion in their lives. The reason for this can vary from the lack of acceptability to the fact that some people are just not comfortable enough, but the most basic reason for such an attitude towards technology remains simply because people have not been trained how to go about using this technology in their lives.

Strategic choices in organizational decision-making
Strategic Choices - SWOT "Competitive advantage" is approached with the seriousness of a science involving carefully chosen strategies for cost advantage and/or differentiation advantage. Achieving one or both of those advantages through the use of one or more of four strategic business methods ideally gives a company a significant competitive edge over its competitors. The Coca-Cola Company apparently uses three of these strategies to achieve a premiere position in the global beverage industry. The achievement of competitive advantage is an apparently tireless quest using one or more of four basic strategies. "Low Cost" concentrates on delivering an equal or better product at a lower cost. "Differentiation" concentrates on delivering or at least seeming to deliver a product with more and/or better benefits than products delivered by one's competition. "Focus" uses either cost advantage or differentiation advantage in a targeted, narrow market. "Preemption" concentrates on being the first to innovate, produce, distribute, market, or engage in some other competitive business aspect. Using one or more of these strategies successfully can create a "superior value" giving a company a sustained competitive advantage over its competitors.

‘Outsourcing' in a hospitality context means hiring outside contractors to do the work ordinarily done by departments in your own hotel. According to Vitasek, ‘Early outsourcing helped companies realize balance sheet improvements, access lower-cost labor and often improve productivity'. Because of these advantages, outsourcing continues to be practiced in hotels today, and newer and better models for outsourcing have been introduced as well. Clearly, outsourcing is here to stay: the practice has been steadily increasing in the industry every year (Yetzer 2010).

socilogy of work
It has become a generally acknowledged fact nowadays that a new global economy is coming into view. This innovative international economy is distinguished "by the transnational flow of capital, goods, services and labor; by greater national specialization and increased competition across borders; and by the use of new technologies" (O'Toole & Lawler III, 2006). Moreover, it has completely disturbed the long-established ways of business responsibilities and operations.
