What is Quality?

Quality is a broad, cross-disciplinary concept studied in business, healthcare, nursing, marketing, and organizational management courses. It encompasses the standards, processes, and outcomes that determine how well a product, service, or system meets defined expectations. In healthcare contexts, quality is closely tied to patient safety, culturally competent communication, and holistic care planning. In business settings, frameworks such as Total Quality Management — referenced directly in course materials like Oakland's TQM textbook — provide structured approaches for analyzing how organizations improve performance and reduce deficiencies across operations.

The papers archived on this topic reflect a wide range of analytical approaches. Healthcare-focused essays examine quality through patient-centered lenses, including nursing care plans for terminally ill patients, quality of life concerns for those with renal failure, and psychiatric nursing challenges such as bipolar disorder management. Business-oriented work tends toward case studies and simulations, drawing on examples like the Tanglewood case and buyer behavior analysis to evaluate organizational decision-making. Some essays address quality at the intersection of culture and care, exploring how cultural differences in healthcare settings affect outcomes and communication effectiveness.

A strong essay on quality requires a clearly scoped thesis that identifies a specific dimension — process, outcome, or standard — rather than treating quality as a vague ideal. Evidence drawn from clinical data, established management frameworks, or well-analyzed case studies carries the most weight. The most common pitfall is defining quality too broadly at the outset, which leads to unfocused analysis; anchoring the argument in a concrete setting, such as patient safety by care setting or consumer behavior in a regulated market, keeps the discussion grounded and persuasive.

Leadership Models Literature Review of Situational Leadership
Situational leadership is a leadership paradigm proposed by Hersey and Blanchard as an alternative to the simplistic trait theories of leadership in vogue at the time. The main feature of the situational leadership theory of Hersey and Blanchard is that leaders are able to adapt their leadership styles to the level of readiness of the followers (Bovee et al. 1993). Employee readiness is a function of the ability and willingness of employees to engage in certain behaviours while leadership styles range from telling and selling styles to participating and delegating styles. These styles reflect varying emphasis on task and relationship behaviour by the leader.

The ongoing debate on the issue of whether abortion should be a legal option still divides people of USA although it has been long since the Roe v Wade case wherein the legality of abortion was upheld in a US Supreme Court decision. They advocate that pregnant women will undertake illegal abortions which are unsafe in the absence of legal sanction to abortion.

Leadership and ethics in organizational contexts
Staying in step with customer and client needs is more than fulfilling their requests on a periodic basis and meeting their basic expectations, as any company that excels in client management understands. It is the ability to align every aspect of an enterprise to the needs and expectations, experiences and requirements of clients. Often internally-based organizations including those that are given the objective of being client-focused, end up paradoxically being the most myopic and inward-focused, resistant to change. Any organization that is experiencing this is in danger of losing the most valuable relationships and trust they have with customers. As leaders must continually push accountability, ownership and a clear sense of responsibility for results to the front lines of their enterprises, when traditional management and leadership strategies fail to deliver results, change is required. The intent of this analysis is to provide prescriptive guidance on how leaders can manage this level of disruptive change, defining how managing and leading are vastly different. It is often said that a manager is what one does, and a leader is who one is. The CEO attempting to lead this change management effort or strategy will have to contend with powerful political forces internally that managers who believe in command-and-control will use to subvert and force this initiative to fail. Managers who are accustomed to command-and-control will also fight for their political power base in the organization, despite the fact their often authoritarian and transactional leadership styles are highly ineffective in transforming organizations. The wealth of studies completed on change management indicate that a CEO with Emotional Intelligence (EI) and transformational leadership skills is the most powerful change agent there is in any organization or enterprise (Fitzgerald, Schutte, 2010) (Yarberry, 2007). The CEO needs to model the behavior that is needed to assist these managers in moving beyond their often highly charged political agenda of internal power to realize that by becoming more transformational as leaders they significantly open up their own potential professional growth in the process. The best transformational leaders can more focused on the win-win of personal and professional development also benefiting the organization (Lewis, 1996). These factors are all critically important for the leader looking to bring transformative change to their client organization. Implicit in the structural change of the organization is the even more powerful and potentially disruptive political one. For the leader to be effective in making these changes, they will have to exhibit a very high level of EI, transformational leadership and show a compelling vision of the future, all built on a strong foundation of trust (Wilbanks, 2011).
