What is Quality?

Quality is a broad, cross-disciplinary concept studied in business, healthcare, nursing, marketing, and organizational management courses. It encompasses the standards, processes, and outcomes that determine how well a product, service, or system meets defined expectations. In healthcare contexts, quality is closely tied to patient safety, culturally competent communication, and holistic care planning. In business settings, frameworks such as Total Quality Management — referenced directly in course materials like Oakland's TQM textbook — provide structured approaches for analyzing how organizations improve performance and reduce deficiencies across operations.

The papers archived on this topic reflect a wide range of analytical approaches. Healthcare-focused essays examine quality through patient-centered lenses, including nursing care plans for terminally ill patients, quality of life concerns for those with renal failure, and psychiatric nursing challenges such as bipolar disorder management. Business-oriented work tends toward case studies and simulations, drawing on examples like the Tanglewood case and buyer behavior analysis to evaluate organizational decision-making. Some essays address quality at the intersection of culture and care, exploring how cultural differences in healthcare settings affect outcomes and communication effectiveness.

A strong essay on quality requires a clearly scoped thesis that identifies a specific dimension — process, outcome, or standard — rather than treating quality as a vague ideal. Evidence drawn from clinical data, established management frameworks, or well-analyzed case studies carries the most weight. The most common pitfall is defining quality too broadly at the outset, which leads to unfocused analysis; anchoring the argument in a concrete setting, such as patient safety by care setting or consumer behavior in a regulated market, keeps the discussion grounded and persuasive.

Lean Jpf Process Map the \"Current\" Situation
1. Process map the "current" situation or process for completing new JPF policy applications. Highlight and color code the different kinds of MUDA that exist(ed) in the process and describe how the MUDA impacted quality, cost and customer satisfaction. [25 points] ? T: Transportation – the processes were set up in functional departments as opposed to trying to create a value chain. As a result, office mail had to move files to various floors creating inefficiencies in file transportation. ? I: Inventory – Inventory (applications for service) was processed in large batches and contained a mix of different complexities of applications. Thus inventory would build up and not flow. ? M: Motion – Due to the large batches, the motion of the process was intermittent and ineffective. There was no flow through the processes until this was recognized. ? W: Wait – Since some applications required more work than others and these were not separated, the easier applications suffered large wait times. ? O: Over-processing – Individuals and management were focused more on their own outputs and metrics than concentrating on the throughput. As a result some operations over-processed while others under-processed. ? D: Defect – Since there was originally a large error rate, many applications would have to return to previous processes for re-work.

Marketing management principles and practices
The controversy of Chick-fil-A CEO Dan Cathy stating he believes and supports the biblical definition of marriage and the immediate reactionary response from gay groups shows how just how divisive the issue of gay rights and marriage is in the United States. After reading Huffington Post and Washington Post, an interest paradox emerges. The stance of Dan Cathy against gay marriage and his support of organizations that promote the Christian definition of a family have become a lightening rod for gay rights activists. Reading between the lines of both articles one can't help but compare the assiduous pursuit of rights the gay activists are pursuing to the peaceful and reasoned approach of Dr. Martin Luther King during the civil rights movement of the last century. Comparing both, the gay rights activists appear to look for a slight or insult; they scour quotes from company and industry leaders looking for evidence of prejudice. Within the context of this paradox is a huge sales windfall for Chick-fil-A. The attacks of the gay activists, instead of being presented with logic and reason as Dr. King would have done, are scattered in shotgun-like fashion across the media, where attention appears to be more important to activists than changing the sentiment of Dan Cathy. Widely perceived as an attack and with the prompting of former Governor Huckabee, the store set a record in sales during a day that was supposed to be a major boycott. This paradox just made Dan Cathy, his family and his employees – everyone involved in the company – richer, more financially stable and fiscally able to weather uncertainty. The attacks of the gay rights activists were not aimed at changing hearts and minds, it was meant to shame a conservative businessman who happens to believe in traditional marriage. Ironically when activists attack a brand people love, customers rush to the aid of the businesses they trust and admire. This is exactly what happened.
