What is Scenario?

A scenario, in academic writing, refers to a structured situation or set of conditions that students are asked to analyze, respond to, or solve. This type of assignment appears across a wide range of disciplines, including business, healthcare, criminal law, psychology, and organizational studies. Scenario-based tasks are academically valuable because they require students to apply theoretical knowledge to realistic circumstances, testing not just comprehension but also reasoning, judgment, and decision-making. Rather than writing purely abstract essays, students must ground their responses in the specific conditions presented, making these assignments a practical bridge between coursework and professional practice.

The papers collected here reflect the broad range of fields where scenario analysis is assigned. Some take a financial lens, examining capital budgeting, corporate finance, and price and volume variances within given business conditions. Others approach organizational and leadership challenges, including communication behavior and open systems theory applied to specific institutional contexts. Additional papers address legal scenarios involving criminal law distinctions, healthcare leadership decisions, threat assessments, and applied psychology in sports settings. Whether the format is a case study, a summative assignment, or a structured question response, the common thread is using a defined situation to drive focused analysis.

A strong scenario-based essay begins by clearly identifying the key conditions and constraints the scenario presents before building a focused thesis around the central problem or decision. Evidence typically comes from course concepts, relevant frameworks, and logical reasoning applied directly to the given facts. The most common pitfall is writing in general terms rather than engaging specifically with the scenario's details — every claim should connect back to the particular situation described.

Sarah's legal adviser analyzes breach of contract and offer acceptance
As Sarah's legal adviser under the previously described scenario, there a several questions I would like to ask my client before devising any potential defenses against Barry's charge of breach of contract. According to the facts presented by both parties, on Wednesday a conversation took place to negotiate the terms of a potential sale, with ownership of a refurbished laptop being transferred to Barry in exchange for $1,000 payment. On Wednesday, Sarah also informed Barry that her asking price was firm, and as a courtesy she also offered to withhold sale of the laptop until the end of the week if he was still interested. This proviso is central to Barry's eventual claim that a contract has been breached, because in his view this offer to reserve the laptop until Friday night at the very earliest was extended by Sarah and duly accepted by Barry, an agreement which would represent a contractual agreement according to the precedent established by the common law rules of offer and acceptance1. It is my opinion, however, that this case represents an unfortunate circumstance in which offer and acceptance cannot be clearly ascertained, and according to Justice Cooke's opinion in the landmark contract case Meates v Attorney-General, the issue at hand when offer and acceptance is disputed lies in "whether, viewed as a whole and objectively from the point of view of reasonable persons on both sides, the dealings show a concluded bargain."

Studies have shown that anencephalic babies tend to have a very limited life span even with the use of ventilator support. Anencephalic babies are now being used as a source of organ donation because there is no chance of their survival. It was seen that between 1978 and 1982, 205 anencephalic babies were delivered alive in California. It was seen that most of the babies were not given support and they tended to live only till about a week. It is true that modern intensive care facilities have increased the survival time but that is the only thing they do.
