What is Southwest Airlines?

Southwest Airlines is one of the most studied companies in business education, appearing frequently in courses on strategic management, organizational behavior, marketing, and corporate finance. Its decades-long record of profitability in a notoriously volatile industry, its distinctive low-cost carrier model, and its unusually strong employee and customer culture make it a rich subject for academic analysis. Figures such as co-founder Herb Kelleher and leadership transitions involving executives like Gary Kelly are often examined as case studies in how leadership shapes organizational identity and competitive positioning.

Student papers on this topic take a wide range of approaches. Strategic management essays analyze implementation of controls, contingency planning, and competitive positioning within the broader airline industry. Comparative analyses set Southwest against rivals such as American Airlines on financial metrics like stock performance and cost of equity, or draw broader cultural comparisons to frameworks such as McDonaldization and Japanese work organization models. Other papers focus on operational specifics, financial estimation for shareholders, leadership style contrasts, and the company's trajectory at particular moments such as 2008. The book Nuts: Southwest Airlines' Crazy Recipe for Business and Personal Success appears as a recurring source across multiple approaches.

A strong essay on Southwest Airlines requires a focused, arguable thesis rather than a general summary of company history. Evidence drawn from financial data, organizational theory, or specific strategic decisions carries the most weight. The most common pitfall is treating Southwest's success as self-evident rather than explaining the specific mechanisms — cultural, operational, or financial — that produced measurable outcomes.

Competitive positioning of Southwest Airlines and JetBlue Airways
The airline industry is one that has rapidly evolved both with regards to technology and product offerings. This paper argues that technological advancements, deregulation and competitive pricing and marketing strategies are what have driven change in regards to JetBlue. The paper goes on to explain how each of these factors affects and drives change in the other three. Deregulation occurred to increase competition; competition in turn affects innovation in marketing and pricing as well as technology, yet this process has no specific order with regards to where the change starts as innovation and competition, can then affect the way the market is regulated. The paper begins by giving a history of pricing strategies and how the deregulation that occurred in 1978 revolutionized the business and it's pricing. It then goes on to the industry analysis which discusses how travel agencies affected pricing due to the percentage that they took from sales.

Boeing's 787 Dreamliner: supply chain delays and project feasibility
Boeing has been a leader in the aerospace industry for years, however not all of its projects have seen the same level of success. Boeing's latest development is the Boeing 797 Dreamliner. Boeing's hope was that the Dreamliner would allow it to reclaim industry dominance by revolutionizing air travel. Unfortunately, the Dreamliner project has been plagued with significant problems that have caused delays and, in many ways, turned the Dreamliner into a nightmare for Boeing. Many of these delays are attributable to supply chain issues, and those issues have created production delays as significant as three years. The goal of this research is to look at the feasibility of Boeing continuing the Dreamliner project. Generally, a feasibility analysis is conducted prior to a company beginning a project. However, given the substantial problems that Boeing has encountered in transitioning the Dreamliner into reliable mainstream production, it seems appropriate to conduct another feasibility analysis at this point to determine whether it is feasible for Boeing to continue this project or whether it would be a better business decision for Boeing to significantly change the project.
