About This Topic

Success as an academic topic appears across business, management, organizational psychology, and humanities courses. It invites rigorous examination because success is not a fixed outcome but a condition shaped by strategy, structure, human behavior, and external circumstance. Students are asked to analyze what makes individuals, companies, and initiatives succeed or fail, drawing on frameworks from strategic management, industrial-organizational psychology, and business case analysis. The topic demands that writers move beyond common assumptions and identify the specific factors and processes that produce measurable outcomes in organizational and professional contexts.

The papers collected here approach success from several distinct angles. Case studies of companies such as Costco, Walmart, Southwest Airlines, and MGM Mirage examine how strategic management, supply chain decisions, and organizational vision drive competitive performance. Other papers take a process-oriented view, analyzing facility startups, change initiatives, and recruitment strategies to understand how organizations ensure successful execution. More humanistic approaches appear as well, including literary and argumentative analysis of the right to fail and the value of academic struggle, alongside historical examinations such as the Great Railroad Strike of 1877 and its impact on labor and institutional change.

A strong essay on success requires a focused, arguable thesis — one that identifies which specific factors, decisions, or conditions produced a defined outcome rather than simply stating that success is desirable. Evidence drawn from case data, documented organizational processes, or close textual analysis carries the most weight. The most common pitfall is treating success as self-evident; strong essays define what success means in their particular context before attempting to explain or evaluate it.

Start and Run a Successful
The society of today is undergoing a wide array of changes, some present at the economic level, others at a political level, or others at a demographic level. Regardless of the nature of the change, the fact remains that the population itself is undergoing numerous processes of change and adaptation to the dynamic contemporaneous society. One important feature in this sense is represented by the eating habits of the population, which are now more focused on cost effectiveness and ease of consumption. The fast food industry is as such flourishing, but the negative impacts upon the health of the consumers are beginning to show. In such a setting, a fast food restaurant serving pasta products would represent a still easily accessible, cost effective solution, but one which better safeguards the health of the population.

Wolfgang Keller at Konigsbrau-Tak (A)
In the case, Wolfgang Keller at Königsbräu-TAK (A) by Jon N. Gabarro the dilemmas are presented of having a subordinate, Dmitri Brodsky entirely unsuited for the role of running sales at global brewery leader Königsbräu's Ukrainian subsidiary, Königsbräu-TAK A.E. Königsbräu's senior management team, the Vorstand however sees having him on staff as a benefit given his knowledge of the Ukrainian market, depth of experience relative to the younger staff members, and industry reputation as an expert in sales and distribution. These are all reasonable expectations for Königsbräu's Vorstand to have, yet in reality Mr. Brodsky is failing. The many conflicts he has with Wolfgang (Wolf) Keller, his lack of social interaction with customers, distributors, his own sales force and others is troubling. The industry is one that is fueled on trust, the most critical asset any commercial director has in their career and professional arsenal. Mr. Brodsky fails to realize that his lack of social interaction and cold, aloof manner are making him less and less trusted by his boss, his sales team reporting to him, distributors and the entire organization. In short, he is creating the ideal set of circumstances to get himself fired. If all this wasn't enough, he also vigorously defends his performance when there are example after example of it being less than optimum, showing a lack of self-awareness as well.
