What is Success?

Success as an academic topic appears across business, management, organizational psychology, and humanities courses. It invites rigorous examination because success is not a fixed outcome but a condition shaped by strategy, structure, human behavior, and external circumstance. Students are asked to analyze what makes individuals, companies, and initiatives succeed or fail, drawing on frameworks from strategic management, industrial-organizational psychology, and business case analysis. The topic demands that writers move beyond common assumptions and identify the specific factors and processes that produce measurable outcomes in organizational and professional contexts.

The papers collected here approach success from several distinct angles. Case studies of companies such as Costco, Walmart, Southwest Airlines, and MGM Mirage examine how strategic management, supply chain decisions, and organizational vision drive competitive performance. Other papers take a process-oriented view, analyzing facility startups, change initiatives, and recruitment strategies to understand how organizations ensure successful execution. More humanistic approaches appear as well, including literary and argumentative analysis of the right to fail and the value of academic struggle, alongside historical examinations such as the Great Railroad Strike of 1877 and its impact on labor and institutional change.

A strong essay on success requires a focused, arguable thesis — one that identifies which specific factors, decisions, or conditions produced a defined outcome rather than simply stating that success is desirable. Evidence drawn from case data, documented organizational processes, or close textual analysis carries the most weight. The most common pitfall is treating success as self-evident; strong essays define what success means in their particular context before attempting to explain or evaluate it.

Key Steps for Opening, Conducting, and Closing Negotiations
The essay describes the negotiating process that I would adopt: I would start off on a friendly basis reminding the other party why we are here and reminding them of their interest in accomplishing the deal. In this way, I have laid the basis for a meeting that would hopefully be perceived as friendly rather than as potentially combative (where each attempts to best the other). I would stress the win-win attitude: that we each have something to gain from the outcome and that we can each meet the other's needed. In order to meet my other party's need, I want to understand them as well as I possibly can. My aim would be to strive for the friendly atmosphere where there is open communication, emphasis on compatibilities, mutual endeavor towards problem solving, and the back-and-forth of opinions.

Archie Norman's Change Management at Asda
Norman's success as a change agent will depend largely on his ability to execute the requisite culture change at Asda. He made an excellent choice when he recruited Allen Leighton as VP of Marketing, who appears to be the sort of individual that associates will look to for confirmation that they are moving in the right direction. Norman's credibility will rest in the financial success of the company that is a result of the cost-cutting and structural changes he implemented early, and the backdrop of the softer attributes of the renewal effort. The shifts that are necessary for robust culture change include coordination of the change efforts in each of the stores, taking down the communication and functional silos, and establishing a rigorous training and development plan for internal managers. Some of this effort will be directed toward back-filling where spots of resistance to change have sprung up and where associates identify areas with which they would like more involvement—this is the work of the mutual engagement of the core, and it will not be unfamiliar to a former McKinsey & Company consultant.

Roman Freedmen and Slavery in a Pompeii Epitaph
Article G32 in Pompeii is an epitaph from a tomb. As Cooley and Cooley (2004) point out, "inscriptions carved in stone on public and private monuments were intended to perpetuate the memory of the individuals concerned," (p. 1). Tomb carvings like this one can be used to "provide a vivid picture of life in an ordinary town" in ancient Rome (Cooley and Cooley, 2004, p. 2). Although some parts of the original inscription were missing, indicated by Cooley and Cooley (2004) with brackets in Pompeii, the reader understands fully the context and multiple meanings of the epitaph. The most notable feature of the inscription is the fact that it refers to a freedman, a freedwoman, and their child.
