What is Success?

Success as an academic topic appears across business, management, organizational psychology, and humanities courses. It invites rigorous examination because success is not a fixed outcome but a condition shaped by strategy, structure, human behavior, and external circumstance. Students are asked to analyze what makes individuals, companies, and initiatives succeed or fail, drawing on frameworks from strategic management, industrial-organizational psychology, and business case analysis. The topic demands that writers move beyond common assumptions and identify the specific factors and processes that produce measurable outcomes in organizational and professional contexts.

The papers collected here approach success from several distinct angles. Case studies of companies such as Costco, Walmart, Southwest Airlines, and MGM Mirage examine how strategic management, supply chain decisions, and organizational vision drive competitive performance. Other papers take a process-oriented view, analyzing facility startups, change initiatives, and recruitment strategies to understand how organizations ensure successful execution. More humanistic approaches appear as well, including literary and argumentative analysis of the right to fail and the value of academic struggle, alongside historical examinations such as the Great Railroad Strike of 1877 and its impact on labor and institutional change.

A strong essay on success requires a focused, arguable thesis — one that identifies which specific factors, decisions, or conditions produced a defined outcome rather than simply stating that success is desirable. Evidence drawn from case data, documented organizational processes, or close textual analysis carries the most weight. The most common pitfall is treating success as self-evident; strong essays define what success means in their particular context before attempting to explain or evaluate it.

Htc High Tech Computer Corporation, Known Almost
High Tech Computer Corporation, known almost universally by the acronym HTC, is a Taiwan based designer and manufacturer of smartphone devices. The company generally creates a base design, gives it a "codename", such as Hermes, and then offers the devices to be sold rebranded by other companies, such as i-mate, or networks, such as T-Mobile or Orange. In 2006 HTC started offering devices in some markets under their own HTC brand (Benou, 2007). The company has long used its own Dopod house brand to sell devices directly in Asia. HTC anticipates continued growth in the smartphone sector (Colombo, 2010). The convenience and excitement delivered by the plethora of mobile digital applications available such as location based services, multimedia entertainment, social networking services, and e-books continue to push smartphones to the fore of mobile phone purchase choices and increase penetration of smartphones in the mobile phone market (Butler, 2009). One of the games folks like to play when a new phone comes out is "spot the defect." And in the case of the HTC One X, a small but vocal number of HOX owners have run into a particularly annoying problem with Wifi (Fruin, 2009). We've known that HTC was still tweaking things on the software side, but this one seemed to involve some internal antennae connections. Squeeze a part of the phone, and your Wifi connection improves.

Southwest Airlines: We Love Bags Determine How
Southwest Airlines was founded on the premise that an airline needs to put its customers and their needs at the center of all operations, and further create a customer experience that is highly differentiated, memorable and sought-after by passengers. Southwest has surpassed even its own initial expectations in these areas. The culture of Southwest galvanizes the employees, customers, stakeholders, suppliers and partners into a cohesive value chain all aimed at keeping costs down and increasing lifetime customer value through loyalty (Krames, 2003). Due to its excellent control of costs and aggressive use of fuel hedging, all supported by a very customer-centric, positive culture, Southwest is the only U.S.-based airline to never file for bankruptcy protection, much less ask for a government handout (Rhoades, 2006). Southwest is one of the most unique service businesses in the world due to its ability to translate a core set of values exemplified by a whatever it takes attitude of service to the passenger, friendliness, individual pride, and Company Spirit (Strategic Direction, 2005). Southwest Airlines employees are empowered to take any action that is ethical and legal to ensure customers' satisfaction (Hardage, 2006). The uniqueness and highly differentiated nature of the Southwest culture is also attributable to the thirteen core values that founder and CEO Herb Kelleher put into place with the company was founded (Freiberg, Freiberg, 1996). He wanted to create a culture of accountability, transparency and trust, in addition to allowing employees to be themselves as well. Mr. Kelleher also believed that when employees were fulfilled in their work, they would be willing to go the extra mile for customers as well (Krames, 2003). All of these assumptions turned out to be correct, and led to the definition of the thirteen values the company is based on. These thirteen values include seeking out low cost yet high value solutions to customers' challenges and problems; relentless pursuit of profitability; family; fun; hard work; individuality; ownership; legendary service; egalitarianism; common sense and good judgment in serving customers; simplicity; and altruism. These values are so critical to the success of the company that new employees are screened using procedures to see if they value them, while also submitting to a 360-degree evaluation cycle within six months of being hired (Hardage, 2006). Southwest is serious about keeping their culture highly focused on the thirteen core values, while also ensuring their new hires have an immediate and very clear idea of what it means to be passionately focused on customer satisfaction. No other airline comes close to Southwest's commitment to cultural excellence.
