What is Travel?

Travel as an academic topic spans multiple disciplines, including hospitality management, business strategy, economics, and cultural studies. Students engage with it in courses ranging from tourism management to international business, where it raises questions about how people move across borders, how industries are built around that movement, and how economic and cultural forces shape both. The subject is academically rich because it connects individual behavior to large-scale systems, linking consumer choices, corporate strategy, and national policy within a single framework.

The papers archived under this topic reflect a wide range of approaches. Some take an industry analysis angle, examining strategic management in hospitality companies and how businesses like hotels position themselves competitively. Others focus on tourism trends, exploring how tourism types evolve and what drives changes in traveler demand. Consumer behavior studies appear as well, such as work examining how customers in specific markets select low-cost airlines based on perception and cost. Additional papers address service delivery strategy and international trade and investment as they relate to travel-dependent industries, grounding abstract business concepts in real-world contexts.

A strong essay on travel should establish a focused thesis rather than broadly surveying the entire industry. Claims carry more weight when supported by specific market data, policy examples, or clearly defined case studies. Comparative analysis — weighing two companies, two tourism models, or two national strategies against each other — tends to produce sharper arguments than single-subject descriptions. The most common pitfall is treating travel as a purely positive economic force without accounting for costs, including labor concerns, environmental impact, or market volatility, all of which regularly surface in serious academic treatment of the topic.

John Steinbeck and Jean Baudrillard's contrasting visions of 1960s America
America has long been considered the "land of opportunity," which makes it in turn, an opportune place to travel and explore. Though vast in geography and rich in culture, America has often offered its travelers a similar experience, as these travelers so often find themselves visiting similar places and hearing similar tales of the past and the present. Additionally, travelling often brings with it a longing for the past, as is seen so often in the case of America and the search for an understanding of the "American Dream," which has for years been rooted in the land and resources that America has to offer. Is this notion still true, or is it merely wishful thinking of the past? This question can be explored further in comparing the travels through America of author John Steinbeck, and author and sociologist, Jean Baudrillard. Steinbeck, an American, and Baudrillard, a Frenchman, began their travels through America's heartland in much the same way: eager to learn and explore. And while their distinctly different cultural backgrounds and different perspectives allowed each man to experience the country in his own way, in reading their accounts, one can see vast similarities, which each add a piece to the understanding of America's changing culture in the 1960s and 1970s, especially in terms of the nation's environmental perspectives.

Fetal alcohol syndrome and effects on prenatal development stages
Women who drink alcohol during pregnancy risk the health of the fetus and implicitly, the health of the child after birth. There are few studies made on humans in what concerns alcohol and interferences in prenatal development. That is why research is primarily based on animal studies. It is difficult to determine the exact amount of alcohol that can influence the fetus' development in a negative way and that is way women who plan to have a baby or women who found out that are pregnant should stop drinking during their pregnancies. Some of the most important consequences of severe exposure to alcohol during pregnancy are fetal alcohol syndrome or the death of the fetus. These two, are not the only negative effects that the alcohol has on prenatal development. The brain of the fetus and the healthy development of the fetus' body are also affected by alcohol.

Direct Air Management and Marketing Mistakes
The following case study employs the array of industry metrics discussed above to determine major factors that contributed to Trans World Airlines' (TWA) filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy while American Airlines ("AA") succeeded in the same time period from 1997-2001. This time period was chosen because SEC filings were available, providing valuable insight into the stark differences between the two airlines. TWA was a major U.S. carrier that was founded in 1930 and operated for 71 years until it fell into bankruptcy in 2001 and was subsequently acquired by American Airlines. This ended a tumultuous decade for TWA, which filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy twice in the 1990s.

Heroism in Gilgamesh, the Bhagavad-Gita, and Exodus
In the Bhagavad-Gita, the Book of Exodus, and the Epic of Gilgamesh, there are heroes. However, they are often heroic in ways that are not similar to one another. While some are "obvious" heroes in that they go around slaying monsters, others are more reserved heroes who provide truth and understanding to humanity. Both of these heroic acts are highly valuable, even though they are presented quite differently.
