The middle class as a social sector and movement in the society is a benefit because of its ability to mobilize and incite action among people, both socially and legally -- as Daniel explicated, "...explored a legal path to equal rights." The middle class was also a detriment for the civil rights cause because most of the middle class people are white Americans, an ironic situation considering that these very people fought for equal rights in their society. It can be said that "Lost" demonstrated how the middle class was a result of the many movements that emerged as Americans, both white and black, became more aware of their rights as individuals, regardless of one's race, gender, age, socio-economic class, and social status in the society. Misguided as this social movement was initially, the middle class emergence in America in the 1950s developed into a major force that eventually helped change the way racial differences and prejudice is viewed and understood in the American society. Through the middle class movement, America became aware that more than racial differences, socio-economic differences and the politics that come with it is more oppressive and detrimental to the cause and principles of the Civil Rights Movement.
