In this time of great sorrow, there is still someone who will help you get through whatever hardships you are facing. The thematic foundation also relies on the element of love to provide power and emotion into the song and the performance. Love helps keep individuals strong because it allows them to always have someone by their side to support them. As such, the lyrics quote "Even if your miles away / I'm by your side / So don't you ever be lonely / Love will make it alright" (Carey 1994). In this, the thematic structure is revealed. No matter what distances may separate loved ones, they will always be there to help pick you up when you fall. Thus, the song is not only a testament to keeping the faith when things go wrong, but also about how love can endure even the worst hardships. Love is one of the most powerful emotions we as humans feel. By playing on the natural emotions invoked by thinking about endless love, the song retains a strong sense of power. Here, Carey sings "If you just believe in me / I will love you endlessly / Take my hand / Take me into your heart / I'll be there forever baby / I won't let go / I'll never let go" (Carey 1994). Mariah Carey's actual performance is one which will definitely transcend the ages. Through her vocal strategy, she takes the seemingly simple, cut and dry lyrics and intensifies them to an entirely new degree. The intense emotion of the performance matches the intensity of the lyrics themselves and draws out the short lyrics to intensify them. The amazing use of her voice is then used to exemplify the tones of the song with the incredible range in her singing. The chorus is sung by a group of background singers as well as Mariah Carey. This also intensifies the performance of the song and adds to the thematic structure of the song in that she is surrounded by others during the chorus section. She is surrounded by friends. The song fades out which signifies that the performance will be ongoing, just like the strength of her love that can rescue someone from their darkest hour.
Overall, it is clear that the strength of this song is not in the lyrics alone, but in the motion touched upon by the thematic structure and the amazing performance done by Mariah Carey. It is Carey's incredible range that empowers the song to reach new heights from its limited position as seen with just the lyrics alone. It is Mariah Carey who makes this song memorable, and not the song which makes her memorable.
