The narrator compares the ape to "ancient men of the forest, who were forced into silence and submission" as well as the mentally deficient. But because the monkey is not fully human and does not speak like him, the man sees him as inferior and ultimately drives the monkey man. The tendency to see 'the other' as inferior is manifest in prejudice against native people as well as animals. Resnick's allegorical story shows how human violence and prejudice is an endless cycle. The relationship between humans and animals is more complex because of the deeper barriers to understanding and sympathy between the two species.
