Written Assignment 1: Analysis of Current Situation

This assignment is designed to provide context for the study of gangs by becoming familiar with the appearance, growth or decline of gangs within your local community and state. What is the view of governmental, school and social agencies on the trends locally? Check local newspapers and news reports related to the topic.

You are required to research local trends through Interviews (phone or in person) and by obtaining statistics related to this issue. If your area, according to local officials, is not experiencing gang development, include that information in your report.

Please follow the following two steps to complete your research.

1. Research

Starting with Local School and Law Enforcement, Court or social agencies, research statistics on the number, characteristics and trends in gangs in the local area. Inquire about State statistics. Ask for suggestions for additional contacts and information.

Introduce and explain the nature and purpose of your inquiry. Give the name of the school and the course.
Make note of names, titles, dates of phone or in person interviews to include in page one of your Report.
Using online resources (Check the External links page) locate National, State and local resources for statistics and information and programs. Ask local law enforcement and community agencies for sources for this and future assignments.
Make note of all necessary and relevant information citing for references.

2. Write a 3-4 Pages Report (40 points)

Prepare a report on your process (resources, approach, search terms) and your findings, using appropriate references (APA Style).

Part I (1 page) will discuss your process, how you went about finding the information. What resources did you use? With whom did you speak? What online sources did you use and how did you find them (search terms, search engine used, search terms used to narrow your search, and the URL of sample sites and information located)? Include questions and responses used in interviews.
Part II (2 to 3 pages) will present your findings, appropriately analyzed and referenced (APA Style). Include growth trends and support for your position.

RESEARCH OPTIONS AND INTERVIEW QUESTIONS
Assignment 1 is designed to provide context for the study of gangs by becoming familiar with
the appearance, growth or decline of gangs within your local community and state. What is the
view of governmental, school and social agencies on the trends locally? Check local newspapers
and news reports related to the topic.
Research local trends through Interviews (phone or in person; ask for about 15 minutes) and
Internet databases and reports. If you local area does not post that data, state that in your report
and focus on interviews and local governmental and state statistics.
Starting with Local School and Law Enforcement, Court or social agencies, research
statistics on the number, characteristics and trends in gangs in the local area. Inquire
about State statistics. It may take going through a couple of people to reach the person
who has the information.
A. Introduce yourself and explain the nature and purpose of your inquiry. Provide
the name of the College, the course title and the nature of the assignment.
Indicate a willingness to call back or come in (if possible). Have a couple
of times that would work for you handy and ask if that is convenient for
them. If not, ask when it might be most convenient for them and try to
reach accommodation.
Be prepared to be flexible. Remember you are asking for their time.
Ask your question and allow some time for them to find or think. If they
hesitate, ask if it would be helpful if you emailed your questions to them
prior to coming in or calling back. (I would recommend you use the
College email, an indication of the legitimacy of your request.)
B. Make note of names, titles, dates of phone or in person interviews to include in
page one of the final report. Ask for suggestions for additional contacts and
information
If you cannot reach someone who has the information or it does not exist, indicate
who you called (police, sheriff, country state or other local law enforcement, school
or local agency). Include the phone number, the date and time of the efforts, the
name of the person who indicated there were not statistics, and concentrate on the
Internet data. Put that information in your Report.
C. Using online resources (Check the External links page) locate National, State
and local resources for statistics and information and programs. Ask local law
enforcement and community agencies for sources for this and future assignments.
Make note of all necessary and relevant information citing for references.
INTERVIEW QUESTIONS: Prepare at least 4 questions however keep an eye on the time
(15-20 minutes). Everyone will as the same first 2 questions then ask their prepared questions or
follow-up on questions raised by their responses. Record both the questions and the responses in
your Report.
1. What is the type and amount of gang activity in ______ (local) area and how do we
know that? What types of complaints, reports or behavior indicates that?
2. Has this amount of activity changed over the past 5 years, and if so in what way?
3. Your question: think about types of gangs, how they are identified? Have schools
been affected? What they believe the trend to be (more, less) or an aspect of gangs of
special interest to you.
4. Your question: think about programs or resources available for dealing with
disruptive gang behavior, or perhaps how local organizations have responded to the
gang issue.
Thank them for their time; as again for recommendations to other persons or agencies that might
have additional information. Ask about state statistics and where to obtain them?
REMEMBER: you may need persistence and repeated efforts before you reach the right person,
so dont leave it to the last minute. Time will be required to set up the interviews, locate
the right person (the one who knows) and arrange convenient times. Persistence is one of
the attitudes needed for good research. Keep track of your efforts in a journal according
to the requirements stated above. You will need this for citing your findings and in
reporting your process.

Integrating Theory and Practice

The purpose of this paper is to provide you with an opportunity to enrich your skills/knowledge as a teacher in ways that you chose. Within the purview of the course topic, Teaching Adults, write two (or more) learning objectives for yourself for what you can learn by reading relevant research and scholarly writing. The objectives can center on more than one area of interest as long as they are integrated.

My learning objectives (I call them research questions?weird profs!) are:

What are the elements of a thriving Senior?s community arts program?
How effective is art theory in the field of physical therapy?

In order to meet your learning objectives, select and read 6-8 scholarly research articles that will help you meet your objectives. You will then write one paper (5-8 pages, so I ordered 6 pages) outlining the following:

Introduction

details your learning objectives, why you chose them (I chose them because I am a teaching artist that is integrating into the field of adult community art education), and the process for selecting readings about the topics.
A detailed discussion presenting and critiquing the literature findings relevant to your topics.
A summative discussion about specific ways you could incorporate your findings in to your own teaching. (I am a teaching artist in adult Arts education)
STRICT APA 6TH EDITION FORMATTING MUST APPLY THROUGHOUT THE ENTIRE PAPER.

Reports of this reading and your analysis of it will be shared with the rest of the class in the final class session.

Here are options for the Integrating paper: (but you, ?the writer?, may choose to use these?or not)

Brookfield, S.D. (2013). Powerful techniques for teaching adults. San Francisco, California: Jossey Bass Publishing.

Galbraith, M.W., Ed. (2004). Adult learning methods. (3rd ed.). Malabar, Florida: Krieger Publishing Company.

Question 1:

You are the recently appointed Budget Director of a nonprofit agency that provides assistance to the community. The Director has asked for your input on how to raise additional revenue for the Organization. You have narrowed your recommendation to two choices. One: A user fee for individuals who currently request assistance. These fees would be for individuals in predominately lower income areas and are currently without charge. Two: Plan a fundraiser dinner targeting a more affluent population including many politically influential individuals and several members of the state government.

*Considering all the budgetary, political, public, and ethical implications which option would you recommend and why?

*Be sure to cite to applicable theoretical and conceptual sources to support your line of recommendation.

Question 2:

Congratulations! The leader of your country/state/region recently signed into law a piece of legislation that you authored that requires the recycling of electronic waste as a way to protect the environment. Unfortunately, you discover that much of this electronic waste is being loaded into containers and placed on cargo ships heading for countries in the third world. Once they arrive, the containers are unloaded and child labor is utilized to take the small, but valuable, metals out of this electronic waste. In some instances, the electronic parts are melted down, thereby exposing the workers to hazardous chemicals, and some workers die. In the process, the land, water, and food supply also are being contaminated.

*Please evaluate the political, social, and ethical implications of this decision that was made in the public interest

Develop and present a model and/or A Development Guidance and Counseling Program for a school or a community Agency. Summarize your presentation into a 6 pages paper including references. Downloaded your model in E-Course as well. This is a key assessment. Your selected model should include: (1) Title of your model at the top of the page, (2) Objectives for the model, (3) A mission Statement, (4) Philosophy, (5) Program Design, which includes ,(a) what are you doing?, (b) How are you implementing it?, and (c) How are you going to measure the success of your model?. Even though creativity is encouraged, you should have documentation throughout your paper. (6) A minimum of five to ten references should be listed as references at the end of your paper. All references cited in the bibliography should be seen in the content of your paper. Your model should be a document that you can use after the class is completed.

Logic Model for the Community
PAGES 1 WORDS 315

To successfully complete this learning unit, you will be expected to:

Describe the Logic Model for the organization selected for review and study.
Analyze the measures employed in a nonprofit organization and their relationship to providing quality outcomes.
Differentiate between the activities and the outputs and outcomes of an organization or program.
Demonstrate quality academic writing skills including use of APA style and accurate grammar and punctuation.

Logic Model: Draft in Unit 4, Final Draft in Unit 5, and included in Final Project in Unit 10
Completing a logic model for your program is the first step in understanding how the program was developed, the implications for evaluating its effectiveness, and the information you will need to justify its existence as worthy of philanthropic support. In many cases, nonprofit leaders and managers get so involved in providing activities for their clients that they forget that the changes in people's lives (outcomes) are the important results of their work. As you complete the logic model, use the Logic Model template under Resources to gather information about your selected program for use in your presentation. Be sure to submit the Logic Model template with the assignment.

Investigate the measurement system extant in the organization and analyze those methods to determine their emphasis based on an understanding of the logic model and evaluation protocols. Find out whether they are input, process, output, or outcome measures. Inquire about changes in activities or programming based on the systematic review of measures or other evaluation protocols. Determine who reviews the measures and why. Recommend at least two measures and a process for capture of those measures that will enhance the ability of the organization to accomplish its mission and provide a positive impact on the lives of its clients.

Develop a logic model and a measurement plan for the organization or a selected major program of the organization. Use PowerPoint to develop a presentation that will demonstrate how the organization goes about bringing change in people's lives. The presentation is intended to leave the viewer with a complete and thorough understanding of the program you have selected. This should be at least 12 to 15 slides and include measures for each of the major components of a simple logic model (inputs, activities, outputs, and outcomes). Pictures, graphic representations, stories, et cetera, that will make the organization come alive are also important.

The presentation should demonstrate the important ingredients that go into (inputs) the activities you provide for your clients. It will then demonstrate how those activities are counted (outputs) and how they impact the lives of people and the community on a short- or long-term basis. If helpful, you can imagine the viewer to be a new board member of your organization, a prospective funder, or a group of interested community members.

PowerPoint Tutorials are available for you under Resources in preparation to complete the Logic Model.
