Morgan's Case Study Morgan is a bi-racial 16-year-old adolescent male whose mother is Japanese-American and the father is African-American. His parents divorced when he was 3 years old and have negative feelings towards each other even though they both love him. Morgan's parents have remarried and have children. He has very good relationships with his father, stepmother, and younger sisters but has struggled to have a good relationship with his mother after she remarried.
The family situation is quite stressful since it's difficult for Morgan to see his mother who relocated to another state while the father lost his job and the family is experiencing tremendous financial challenges. While Morgan has developed feelings for one young woman in his social group, he is skeptical of asking her out on a date for fear of rejection.
In the past year, he has demonstrated behavioral changes including identifying himself as African-American instead of biracial, increased absenteeism from school, failure to complete assignments, withdrawal from social settings, and depression due to lack of contact with his mother. Theories and Therapeutic Approach when Counseling Morgan Morgan's family problems and behavioral problems indicate a need for a suitable intervention plan. This plan would entail counseling that will focus on helping Morgan develop coping strategies for dealing with his problems.
When counseling Morgan, it's important to consider theories and therapeutic approaches that are suitable for his situation. The use of different theories and therapeutic approaches when counseling Morgan is part of an integrated counseling and psychotherapy approach, which is a popular approach when working with clients (Neukrug, 2012). One of the theories that can be utilized when counseling Morgan is psychodynamic theory.
Psychodynamic theory, which is also known as psychoanalysis, is rooted in the work of Sigmund Freud and is based on the belief that unconscious internal forces drive an individual's behavior. Consequently, an individual can deal with his/her condition through identifying these unconscious forces. The other theories that can be used when counseling Morgan are behavioral theory and cognitive theory.

Secondly, Morgan will need counseling for the stressful situation in his family, which is seemingly the cause of his behavior changes. Third, Morgan will need counseling for his withdrawal from social situations and friends, which is partly affecting his education. Finally, the client will need counseling for the bullying that has occurred in the form of verbal attacks and online harassment.
Techniques to Use when Counseling Morgan The are various techniques in psychodynamic therapy that can be utilized when counseling Morgan in order to effectively address each of the challenges identified in the previous step. One of these techniques in psychodynamic therapy is free association, which is an approach that seeks to encourage a client to look for underlying unconscious factors (Ivey, D'Andrea & Ivey, 2012, p.201).
According to Jones-Smith (2012), free association is core psychoanalysis technique that enables a client to say anything that comes to mind despite of how meaningless, painful or stupid it may sound. Free association helps in identifying deeper underlying thought processes that causes someone to edit or censor their thoughts. The use of this technique will entail creating a safe environment for free interactions with Morgan and permitting him to say whatever comes to his mind. Morgan will be encouraged to express/communicate his thoughts and ideas in an unstructured manner.
For instance, the free interactions will enable Morgan to share about his feelings towards one young lady in his social group and what he intends to do about these feelings. The free association will help understand the psychological processes that have contributed to Morgan's self-identification as an African-American rather than biracial. In this case, Morgan will freely share about his view of African-Americans vis-a-vis the other races and why he considers himself as so.

During this process, the therapist will encourage Morgan to reinterpret his life experiences and worldview based on insights from the counseling session.

Multicultural Aspects of Morgan's Case In light of the psychological, emotional and behavioral dynamics of Morgan as presented in the case, there are several multicultural aspects that should be considered during the counseling and/or therapy process. One of these multicultural aspects of this case is race, which seemingly plays a major role in the client's self-identification. Morgan is biracial and has grown up in a multi-racial home setting and a multicultural learning environment in his school. Since his father and mother are African-American and Japanese-American respectively, Morgan is biracial.
However, the centrality of race as a multicultural aspect in the case is evident in the client has started identifying himself as African-American despite previously identifying himself as biracial. This change has been characterized by his increased desire and focus on African-American issues including history, music, culture, and literature. The second multicultural aspect of this scenario is the African-American culture given that Morgan has started to focus on this culture as part of his self-identity as African-American.
In essence, Morgan is increasingly exploring the various aspects of the African-American culture to help in his self-identification. The third multicultural aspect is Morgan's attachment to his mother despite living with his father. His attachment to his mother has contributed to suspected depression because of lack of communication and contact with her.
Cultural/Racial Identity Development Theory is a concept that refers to the sense of collective/group identity depending on an individual's perception that he shares a common racial heritage with a specific race or group (Han, West-Olatunji & Thomas, 2011). This theory was initially developed to help understand people of color since they were considered to have distinct cultural heritages. In counseling, Cultural/Racial Identity Development Theory is utilized to examine and understand multicultural aspects of a client's issue. This theory has two models i.e.
minority (African-American/Black) and majority (White) identity development models that have distinct stages on cultural/racial identity development. According to this theory, Morgan is in the encounter stage of identity development. Encounter stage is when an individual becomes aware of his race and starts validating him/herself with regards to such an identity. This is evident in the fact that Morgan has not only become aware of his African-American heritage but has started self-identifying himself as an African-American.
Paulo Freire's Theory of Psychological Liberation is an empowerment-oriented therapeutic concept and practice. This theory was developed on the premise that identity is a concept that is socially developed through culture and institutions surrounding a person. This theory applies to this case because it focuses on promoting sensory awareness as an important part of psychological liberation (Ivey, D'Andrea & Ivey, 2012, p.532).
The applicability of this theory to this case is evident in the fact that Morgan needs to be aware of his cultural and social experiences in order to experience psychological liberation. Morgan is struggling with psychological problems because of lack of psychological liberation. As he engages in self-exploration, he will become aware of these cultural and social experiences as sensory/emotional learning occurs to enable him achieve high levels of liberated consciousness. The other theory that applies to this case with regards to multicultural aspects is Raul Quinones-Rosado's Consciousness-In-Action Theory.
Based on this theory, there are four major aspects of personal dimensions of consciousness and action i.e. mental, spiritual, emotional, and physical (Ivey, D'Andrea & Ivey, 2012, 536). The applicability of this theory in this case is Morgan's need to become aware of the various dimensions of reality. The theories and therapeutic approaches that would be utilized when counseling Morgan will help him become aware and direct his consciousness across the various dimensions of consciousness and action.
Ethical Issues in Morgan's Case When counseling Morgan, there are some ethical issues that are likely to occur and need to be addressed in order to enhance the effectiveness of this process in addressing the client's psychological and behavioral problems. One of the likely ethical issues when using psychodynamic therapy in counseling Morgan is the creation of dependency rather than interdependence. This ethical issue is likely to arise because this approach requires the therapist to assume an expert role in the counseling process.
Given this role, Morgan is likely to rely on the therapist to gain insights regarding his unconscious fixations and for feedback regarding his progress in overcoming them. This will create dependency, which a major ethical issue because of the probable imbalance of power between the counselor and client. Secondly, there is probability for development of false memories, which is an ethical issue because it will interfere with the effectiveness of the counseling process.
Probable Challenges When implementing psychodynamic therapeutic approach with this client, there are probable challenges and/or limitations that the therapist is likely to encounter. One of these challenges/limitations is resistance from the client to open up and share his thoughts and feelings with the therapist. Given the extent of Morgan's problems, he is likely to resist sharing his feelings and utilizing this intervention. This would be a major limitation because the success of this therapeutic approach is dependent on the client's willingness to open up.
The second major challenge when utilizing psychodynamic therapy with the client is affordability of this intervention. Psychodynamic therapies are usually time-consuming and expensive, which limits their affordability to many clients. First, I feel more knowledgeable on psychodynamic theories with regards to how they are designed to help clients become more aware of the impact of their past experiences and unresolved conflicts on their current thoughts, feelings, and actions in an unconscious manner (Ivey, D'Andrea & Ivey, 2012, 536). I am more knowledgeable about this theory because I've utilized it as the basis for recommending therapy for different case studies in the course.
Secondly, I feel more knowledgeable on cognitive-behavioral studies, which focus on helping clients become more aware of their unreasonable beliefs that result in their present problems. My understanding of this theory stems from the fact that most of the case studies examined in this course have involved cognitive and behavioral issues. Third, I feel more competent on existential-humanistic theories given my experience as a therapist or counselor in handling various clients' issues.
This theory stresses the significance of practitioners in assisting clients make new meanings of their lives and experiences in a conscious way. 2. How does your chosen theory/theories view human nature/behavior? The three theories I feel most knowledgeable about have different views of human nature or behavior. Psychodynamic theories view human behavior as a consequence of ongoing unconscious impact of past events and unresolved conflicts. In this case, an individual's present behavior is dependent on how past experiences and unsettled issues affect his/her current thoughts, feelings, and actions.
