College Readiness

Who I Am Now

I am a business management graduate presently working as a trucking dispatcher for Pepsi. My job entails the management and organization of various processes including, but not limited to; the collection, fetching, and dispatch/conveyance of cargo/loads to vendors, clients, etc. This is a hugely fulfilling career as it permits me deploy and/or utilize the various skills acquired in the academic realm to fulfill the business objectives of my employer while at the same time satisfying the needs of our diverse clientele. I also cherish working alongside a hugely motivated and dedicated team of colleagues and partners.

Friends and colleagues have often described me as outgoing, industrious, and empathic. I also happen to be an effective communicator and value teamwork. These attributes have enabled me to perform effectively in my present role. This is more so the case given that this particular role happens to be a collaborative effort between various stakeholders including managers and supervisors, drivers, suppliers, as well as clients. Towards this end, the ability to work together with other people and communicate in effective and meaningful formats is crucial.

My Goals

There are three key long-term goals that I would wish to accomplish within the next 10 years:

1. Get/acquire certain skills and capabilities

To enhance the probability of success in my professional aspirations, there are certain skills and capabilities that I will need to acquire. The said skills are inclusive of, but they are not limited to; the ability to generate the relevant documentation such as freight bills, ability to plan routes and schedule drivers, sound knowledge of the logistics industry, etc.

2. Start an own enterprise

I intend to start my own trucking enterprise. There are a wide range of benefits of starting and managing an own business. In my case, I feel that starting my own trucking business will give me an opportunity to swiftly implement a wide range of ideas to fast track the success of the said enterprise. I also feel that being my own boss will go a long way towards motivating my performance and, hence, my productivity. Further, in starting and running my own trucking business, I will be in a better position to achieve financial independence.

3. Impact the lives of others in a positive manner

It would be prudent to indicate that I have always wanted to make a positive impact in society. In essence, I happen to be a firm believer in the belief/assertion that we can all contribute towards making the world in which we live (and our immediate communities) a better place. Towards this end, I intend to engage in the exploration of ways through which I could use my profession for the betterment of humanity. For instance, I could actively seek opportunities for, amongst other things, the deployment of technology to reduce costs related to deliveries and shipment. In my opinion, this would have an impact on the wellbeing of the final users (i.e. customers) especially at this time when most people have less disposable income as a consequence of the global downturn in economic activity.

How I Will Get There

In relation to getting/acquiring certain skills and capabilities

1. Within 2 years: Undertake short-term courses to better enhance my capabilities, i.e. the relevant certificate courses

2. Going forward: Start reading industry-related literature and materials

Possible obstacle(s): Time constraints. To rein in this obstacle, I will seek to engage in better time management (i.e. via effective planning and scheduling) to achieve this goal.
