Meditation and Mindfulness in Psychology Many people have a limited understanding of the idea of mediation and some go as far as to associate it with religious concepts, thus seriously damaging their own (and other people's) comprehension of the topic. However, in order to actually be able to understand what a meditation session is all about, a person would have to experience it first-hand. It is not necessarily that meditation can only occur alongside of others or that one needs a teacher in order to be able to meditate.
However, being in the presence of someone who instructs the person and who provides information that can play an important role in helping them achieve higher states can be especially beneficial. One of the first things I learnt when going to a meditation session was that my background or my religious preferences were irrelevant in this context. I went to a group practicing Falun Gong -- a combination of mediation and ethics originating in China approximately two decades ago.
In spite of the current's young age, it encompasses a series of Chinese traditions and moral ideas that have been around for centuries and even millennia. The meditation techniques that Falun Gong practitioners promote as being the key to improving one's condition involve both physical exercise and exercise designed to help the individual experience spiritual awakenings.
Meditation in this current involves both focusing on the individual's personal interests and on his or her role as a being that is strongly connected with all of the universe and that thus needs to be able to think from a more general point-of-view -- one that regards human kind as a whole rather than people on an individual level. Most of the meditation process consists out of stretching practices that do very little to actually solicit the body.
Even with this, the concentration that one has to put across during these exercises compensate for the 'lack of physical effort'. As I was trying to replicate movements I saw in other practitioners I kept trying to focus on the ideas that they shared with me previous to the meditation process.
Even with the fact that I was somewhat hesitant about considering the universal energy that I could cultivate during this practice, I nonetheless felt better as a result of having thought of a series of positive ideas and about a better world in general. Morality is one of the principal ideas that are associated with Falun Gong and I discovered how meditation can seriously assist a person in improving his or her condition.
During the meditation process I practically took a break from life's busy and turbulent ideas with the purpose.
