What Culture Means Today
Culture is the passing along of values, customs, and ways of behavior that are specific to groups of people. Different races and ethnicities have different cultures. Also, various religions and countries have different cultures. In this sense culture is simply the way that groups of people do things or practice them. People in India, for example, put a lot of spices on their food because it is part of their culture. There are many different important elements of culture. Some of these are the arts including music, visual, and graphic arts. Others involve things like food, clothing and shelter. People prepare their foods differently in different cultures. Similarly, they dress differently and have different types of houses. Culture is important in the study of male and female relationships because it impacts social expectations. A group’s culture greatly affects how males and females are to function in that culture. In Muslim countries, for example, women are supposed to cover themselves and mostly stay within the home.
Sexual selection is the means by which a certain organism distinguishes itself from others in order to mate. Sexual selection is a certain type of natural selection. It makes natural selection less natural because organisms of a particular species try to make themselves different from one another in order to make an impression on their mates. Rather, they are trying to impress potential mates with sexual selection. One of the best examples of sexual selection is found in male peacocks. These birds grow very colorful and decorative tails and maintain them so that they can attract the attention—and have sex with it—female birds. In this case sexual selection is about having physical characteristics to attract sexual partners. Other organisms like flies do elaborate dances to attract sexual partners.
The multiple stages of a transgender individual begin with an awareness of the differences between males and females. This stage usually occurs when these individuals are quite young. The next stage is usually some persistent feeling of dissatisfaction of one’s own gender. Therefore, males will not like the gender roles society puts on them; the same things happens to females. The following stage occurs when transgender individuals find themselves identifying with the opposite gender or sex. This stage usually involves secret or open desires to have the genitalia of the opposite sex. The next stage is to begin dressing like the opposite sex. The final stage is to have hormones and plastic surgery to resemble the opposite sex as much as possible.
Gender is a social construction because it is a concept that is greatly informed by social conventions. There are a number of roles associated with gender, especially in regards to males and females. Males are supposed to be dominant, decisive, leaders, and assertive. Conversely, women are supposed to be, soft, agreeable, and passive. In reality, however, there is little other than social norms that dictate these gender roles. There is nothing stopping a woman from embodying all of these qualities typically characteristic of males. Consequently, there are males which take on many of the aforementioned characteristics describing females. Perhaps the best example of these facts is homosexuals and men who act more feminine and women who act more masculine. In reality, these types of men and women are simply acting in ways that society deems conventionally masculine and feminine.
