One of the major theoretical models for healthcare delivery is the Parse theory of human becoming, created by Rosemarie Rizzo Parse—originally titled the man-living-health theory (2011). This theory focuses on healthcare and the human through the lens of quality of life. This theoretical premise for delivering and receiving healthcare was able to gain steam as a result of its alternative to the more standard bio-medical method and the biological-psychological-social and spiritual method contained in the bulk of other theories of nursing.

This theory has enjoyed much attention and use when delivering healthcare as a result of the fact that it views quality of life as all relative to a person’s viewpoint. Assumptions Main assumptions of Human Becoming Theory Meaning Human becoming allows one to select specific meaning in situations within the realm of human experience. Reality is the culmination of lived experiences. A sometimes nebulous process of co-creation occurs via lived experiences and the universe and the human co-create together.

Rhythmicity This term refers to how the human being evolves via the co-develop and creational patterns it engages in with the universe. The human being co-creates with the universe. Transcendence This theory believes that the individual co-transcends throughout multi-dimensionally with possibilities that continue to emerge. The self is in a stage of constant transformation, even beyond the boundaries set by the person.

Summary Parse’s Human Becoming theory encompasses the overall totality paradigm, which believes that man is an intermingling of the biological, psychological and spiritual elements inherent within reality. This theory also encompasses the simultaneity paradigm that asserts that man is an unified being in continual mutual engagement with the surrounding world, and the surrounding world engaged with the human being. Parse’s theory is so useful because it has overlap with a range of nursing paradigms.

Benefits of the Parse Theory in Healthcare Delivery One of the main advantages of this theory revolves around the fact that it offers distinction of nursing from all the other disciplines out there within the realm of professional healthcare. Within practical healthcare delivery it offers clear guidelines of care and a beneficial administration, making it both useful for education and in forging research methodologies. It creates a framework to craft inquiry of additional nursing theories so that one can examine them using a sense of concrete perspective.

However, this theory has come under criticism for being such a closed circle to itself (currentnursing, 2011). Drawbacks of this Theory in Healthcare Delivery Many of the main shortcomings of this theory are as follows: “Rarely quantifiable results - Difficult to compare to other research studies, no control group, standardized questions, etc.; does not utilized the nursing process/diagnoses; negates the idea that each person engages in a unique lived experience; not accessible to the novice nurse; not applicable to acute, emergent care (currentnursing, 2011).

One of these shortcomings—the fact that the theory isn’t terribly accessible to the average nurse—is highly significant. This suggests that the theory as it is doesn’t have a high level of accessibility, particularly if a nurse needs to have several years under her belt in order to put it correctly into practice. For example, consider the following Parse study, “Feeling Respected” (2006).

In this research, which focuses on 10 participants, “The lived experience of feeling respected is fortifying assuredness amid potential disregard emerging with the fulfilling delight of prized alliances. The structure is discussed in light of the human becoming school of thought and related literature” (parse, 2006). This research conducted by Parse demonstrates how nebulous at times it can be to understand the healthcare delivery applications of her theory.

Much of Parse’s work is so theoretical at times, it can be challenging to understand how it can be put in connection with the high stakes and fast-paced lifestyle of nursing. Conceptual Model Conceptual models refer to “concepts and their relationships that specify a perspective and produce evidence among phenomenon specific to the discipline. Conceptual models address broad metaparadigm concepts (human beings, health, nursing and environment) that are central to their meaning in the context of a particular framework and the discipline of nursing” (Alligood, 2017).

Hence, it’s easy to see why conceptual models are so crucial to the modern nurse as they offer different lenses for engaging in critical thinking about the many challenges and confounding situations they encounter on the job and within their communities so that they can make wise, professional decisions (Alligood, 2017). This is the diagram for the conceptual model for Parse’s theory.

This helps to streamline the major concepts of the theory into sections, and essentially suggest what the nurse’s role in all of it would be. According to this conceptual model, the nurse would be the one guiding, nudging, assisting, helping and illuminating the person in question as they engaged in this lifelong journey with their health and the development and overall becoming, of their health, co-creating that with the environment.

The purpose of this conceptual model is to make so much of the lofty ad intricate theory that underscores Parse’s viewpoint, accessible to the average nurse. For example, much of what Parse believes originates in existential-phenomenological thought, often accessing the factors of human subjectivity and interlocking ideas of co-constitution, co-existence, and situated freedom (Alligood, 2017). These can be very inaccessible, nebulous ideas for the average nurse, and scholars dedicate their lives to exploring these concepts even further.

Instead, with a conceptual model like the one above, one can see and understand that the average person is intentional. “That is humans have an open and meaningful stance with the universe and people, projects and ideas that constitute living experiences. Being intentional means that humans’ involvements are not random. They are chosen for reasons known and not known” (Alligood, 2017).

Thus, there needs to be an acknowledgement of the overall agency of the nurse as a person who can assist in guiding the individual to a place of further development, within the meaningful overall stance that is taken by the individual. As a corollary to this conceptual model, one could draft a corresponding conceptual model to determine and expand all the knowledge of the overall policy within nursing through analysis and evaluation.

Hence, this conceptual model, when paired with the conceptual model of the Parse theory, can offer some concrete benchmarks and tools for evaluation. These five distinct levels engage with the health polices of the time and are also part of the constituents of active healthcare policies (Fawcett & Russell, 2001). There is much that overlaps. Hence, it is important to have conceptual model that offers in-built methods of evaluation with lucidity.

This conceptual model offers a solid complement to the previous one presented, also because the spirituality is such a profound part of the Parse theory, yet something, which still remains somewhat amorphous (Martsolf & Mickley, 2001). As already stated, there are aspects of the Parse theory that can excel at healthcare delivery, and there are parts that can be completely opaque regarding real world application.

It can be harder for the nurse to determine how to use these more opaque tenets, given their “relation to reciprocal interaction or simultaneous action world?views and in relation to the extent of focus on the concept within the model or theory” (Matsold & Mickley, 2001). Hence, all forms of usage can make all theoretical understandings seem tenuous. However, Parse’s theory has the potential to be triumphant.

Given how lofty and how existential its founding pillars are, it is often of great comfort to those people going through extreme trauma and extreme hardship within their lives and health. “The Parse theory of human becoming guides nurses in their practice to focus on quality of life as it is described and lived. Parse's theory is… an alternative approach for nursing practice in pediatric oncology” (Melnechenko, 2001).

The parse theory of human becoming offers very specific and unique aspects for those going through extreme despair and hardship, as its practice dimensions and processes allow the nurse to help the patient consider something loftier—an idea which is hard to grasp when it.
