When you've been asked to write an essay, it can feel overwhelming. That's especially true if you're just getting started out in college and haven't had to write that many essays before. You can also have trouble if you're being asked to write on something you don't know much about,...
Timeline for Professional and Personal Growth Nurse Practitioner (NP) role is one of the specialties in advanced practice nursing and has experienced an increase in demand because of the shortage of nursing (Hamric, Tracy & Hanson, 2013). The growth of the NP role in the modern advanced practice nursing field is also attributable to the increased demand in primary care services. Given the increased demand of these practitioners, the nursing education field is increasingly encouraging more individuals to enroll for nurse practitioner roles.
However, for an individual to become an accomplished nurse practitioner, he/she has to undergo or navigate a complex process to become a full-fledged practicing nurse practitioner (Luckey, 2018). Therefore, the individual needs to have a clear timeline for professional and personal growth as he/she enters the world of advanced practice nurse. This paper provides my timeline for professional and personal growth as a nurse practitioner in today’s healthcare field.
My Professional and Personal Growth Path I am a Nurse Practitioner presently working in an underserved clinic in Southern California. I am currently a DNP student of Brandman University specializing in Mental Health and Psychology. I shall finish the program by August of 2019. I understand that my transition for the DNP program at the university will be a relatively complex one because of the complexities involved in the path to become a full-fledged practicing NP.
However, I intend to have a smooth transition through a clearly established timeline of activities or processes before and after graduation from the university. Currently, I am in the final stages of my DNP program or doctorate prepared advanced practice registered nurse. Therefore, the timeline for my professional and personal growth focuses on the last few months of my education and transition into the new specialty as a nurse practitioner as shown in the Table 1 below. Table 1 – Timeline for Professional and Personal Growth 2018 2019 2020 2021 2022 Jan.

Transition to Nursing Practice As shown in the Timeline above, my first step after graduating with a DNP degree from Brandman University in August 2019 is to undertake a family vacation to Hawaii. The vacation will enable me to reflect on my career, re-examine my professional and personal growth plan as a nurse practitioner, and prepare for my next steps. My transition from school into nursing practice will entail continuing to work as a Nurse Practitioner in the undeserved clinic in Southern California.
Working in this healthcare facility will enable me to enhance my skills as a Nurse Practitioner by giving me opportunities to apply concepts learned in the classroom into real-world practice. I expect my transition from the university to practicing as an NP in this facility to be a smooth one since I have been working in this setting for some time. In my journey to become a full-fledged practicing NP, I seek to engage in continuing education immediately after graduation.
In this case, the next step will entail completing a national certification and state licensure exam through a recognized certification board since it’s a critical step toward the professional development of a nurse practitioner (Buppert, 2014). Based on existing state and federal regulations, nurse practitioners need to obtain licensure from relevant agencies depending on the specific regulations of the particular state. To this extent, I will undertake a national certification and state licensure exam and obtain the relevant credentials for NP practice by February 2020.
I also intend to obtain the relevant licensure or credentials as an advanced practice registered nurse (APRN) within six months of receiving national certification i.e. by August 2020. After being licensed as an advanced practice registered nurse, I will continue in my current role as an NP in the underserved clinic in Southern California. I intend to renew my certification at the beginning of 2021 and plan for my next promotion in clinical practice by February 2021.
The other major step in my career growth will be in June 2021 when I will start consulting practice in nurse practitioner role. I will also engage in mission trips i.e. healthcare missions to Africa and South America to help enhance my practice as well as participate in any emerging continuing education programs and annual professional conferences. I will enroll for a second doctorate degree in August 2020 to specialize in the role of a Family Nurse Practitioner.
My vision is to become a Family Nurse Practitioner who provides primary care services to families, younger children, and women in underserved populations. Since childhood, I have always.
