This paper examines CiscoWorks Wireless LAN Solution Engine (WLSE) Release 2.5, a centralized wireless LAN management product developed by Cisco Systems. The paper outlines WLSE 2.5's core features and benefits — including automated access point configuration, rogue AP detection, RF interference monitoring, and security policy enforcement — as well as the device types it supports. It also documents known software problems and functional limitations identified in the release. Finally, the paper briefly profiles two alternative wireless networking products: HP ProCurve Networking Secure Access 700wl Series and Enterasys Wireless, both of which offer comparable centralized WLAN management capabilities.
CiscoWorks Wireless LAN Solution Engine (WLSE) Release 2.5 is the latest release in the WLSE series. WLSE is a LAN solution product of Cisco Systems that utilizes today's wireless technology. It is a core component of Cisco Systems' SWAN architecture (Cisco Online, 2003). According to Cisco's official documentation:
"The CiscoWorks WLSE is a centralized, systems-level solution for managing the entire Cisco Aironet wireless LAN (WLAN) infrastructure. The advanced radio frequency (RF) and device management features of the CiscoWorks WLSE simplify the everyday operation of WLANs, ensure smooth deployment, enhance security, and maximize network availability, while reducing deployment and operating expense."
At the time of this writing, CiscoWorks WLSE has seven versions, with 2.5 as the latest. These include the 1130 WLSE, 1105 WLSE, WLSE 2.5, WLSE 2.0, WLSE 1.3, WLSE 1.1, and WLSE 1.0.
As with other versions of WLSE, CiscoWorks WLSE Release 2.5 is a wireless LAN solution that offers significant benefits for system administrators. It allows administrators to monitor problem access points and radio frequencies that experience interruptions. Optimal access points and bridges are automatically configured in WLSE, making it a solution to the time-consuming and expensive process of manual configuration (Cisco Systems, 2003). This automation includes the selection of system channels and power transmission settings.
The automatic configuration capability of WLSE assures network security through its fault-monitoring feature. Cisco Online lists the following benefits common to all WLSE versions:
Aside from these fundamental features, WLSE Release 2.5 introduces additional radio management capabilities, including: rogue AP detection, interference detection, a location manager offering 2-D visualization, and assisted site surveys that automate configurations (Cisco Online, 2003). With WLSE Release 2.5, users can detect unauthorized or rogue access points and deploy new access points with the help of coverage maps the system generates (Rendon, 2003). In addition, WLSE Release 2.5 supports network firmware version 12.2(13)JA (Cisco Online, 2003).
CiscoWorks WLSE Release 2.5 supports devices such as access points and bridges, switches, routers, and access servers. Cisco Online documentation provides a complete list of device series and versions supported by WLSE Release 2.5.
