In response, businesses were compelled to make a series of changes in order to enhance the health and safety of their customers, workers, and associates.
Home Depot is an example of a business that transformed its operations in an effort to adjust to the impact of the global pandemic. This paper explores how Home Depot adjusted to the pandemic through changes in its operations, drawing on relevant management theories and business strategies.
The COVID-19 global pandemic significantly disrupted people's lives and business operations worldwide. Home Depot is an essential retailer to the communities it serves and is ranked the top U.S. home-improvement retailer. Throughout its history, the retailer has experienced tremendous success reflected in consistent profitability. However, its operations were significantly affected by the global pandemic despite its commitment to keeping stores open, as it has always done during times of natural disaster and crisis (Home Depot Product Authority, 2020). The organization strived to keep its stores open because homeowners and businesses rely on it for a wide range of services. Customers depend on Home Depot for urgent needs such as electrical and plumbing repairs, hot water heaters, and refrigerators. Additionally, homeowners and businesses rely on it for harsh-weather products like batteries, tarps, and propane.
Even though the company recognized the importance of keeping its stores open, it was forced to make temporary operational changes. The pandemic generated these changes as the retailer sought to enhance the health and safety of its customers, workers, and business associates. The pandemic also contributed to a significant decline in the number of customers visiting stores. This sharp decline was attributable to factors including stay-at-home orders and shifts in consumer spending.
