Starbucks Investment Analysis: Financial Performance Review

~18 min read 5 sections Finance · Stock Valuation
Abstract

This paper presents a comprehensive investment analysis of Starbucks Corporation, combining qualitative and quantitative methods to evaluate the firm's suitability as a stock investment. The qualitative section examines Starbucks' history, global industry position, and recent stock price movements. The quantitative section analyses key financial ratios — including liquidity, profitability, capital structure, and market value — using data from 2012 to 2016. A stock valuation is then performed using the Constant Dividend Growth Rate (Gordon) model alongside the Capital Asset Pricing Model (CAPM). The paper concludes with an investment recommendation based on the gap between the model's estimated share price and the actual market price, noting that the market appears to price Starbucks with considerable optimism beyond what the dividend model alone can justify.

Key Takeaways

  • Qualitative Analysis: Starbucks history, market position, and stock trends
  • Quantitative Analysis: Liquidity, profitability, and capital structure ratios
  • Stock Valuation Using the Gordon Model: CAPM and Gordon model intrinsic value calculation

What makes this paper effective

  • Integrates qualitative context (brand history, market position, stock price trends) with rigorous quantitative ratio analysis, giving a well-rounded investment picture.
  • Uses clearly labelled tables to present five years of financial data, making ratio trends easy to follow and verify.
  • Applies two recognised financial models — the Gordon Constant Dividend Growth Model and CAPM — to arrive at a calculated intrinsic value, then compares it explicitly to the actual market price to draw a meaningful conclusion.
  • Acknowledges model limitations honestly, noting irrational market behaviour and investor optimism as explanations for the valuation gap.

Key academic technique demonstrated

The paper demonstrates effective triangulation of evidence: qualitative industry analysis, five-year trend data from financial ratios, and a formal stock valuation model are combined rather than used in isolation. This layered approach allows the recommendation to rest on multiple independent lines of evidence, which is a hallmark of sound financial analysis at the undergraduate level.

Structure breakdown

The paper follows a logical investment-report structure: introduction → qualitative context (background, industry position, stock price history) → quantitative ratios (liquidity, profitability, capital structure, market value) → stock valuation (Gordon model calculation and comparison to actual price) → recommendation. This mirrors a standard sell-side equity research note format, making it a clear model for business and finance students.

Introduction

Firms may be successful by satisfying customer needs, but their ultimate accountability for financial performance is to the owners of the firm. Actions undertaken by a publicly quoted firm will usually have the direct or indirect aim of generating revenues and profits, and therefore returns for the owners (Tarraf, 2012). When investors assess a potential investment they will examine the financial performance of a firm, evaluating past results while considering how current and expected strategies will affect the organisation's performance in the context of anticipated macro-environmental conditions (Bodie, Kane, & Marcus, 2014). Investors will assess the share price of a firm, being more likely to make a purchase if they believe its value is likely to increase, with a significant portion of that assessment based on past performance (Hens & Rieger, 2016; Nellis & Parker, 2006).

This report examines and demonstrates this process by looking at the performance of Starbucks, assessing performance using both quantitative and qualitative data, which are also used to assess share value based on the Constant Dividend Growth Rate model. The analysis concludes with a recommendation regarding investment in Starbucks stock.
