About This Topic

If you have been assigned a classification essay, you probably think that it is one of the most boring academic assignments possible.  After all, how can you make an essay that basically describes categories interesting for you as a writer or for the intended readers?

Well, unfortunately, you are right.  Classification essays are a relatively boring type of academic writing.  They simply involve organizing things into categories, then giving examples of things that fit into the category.  They are not fascinating to write or to read, but they can be really important in demonstrating full knowledge of a topic or helping the audience understand the difference between similar things that belong in different categories.

One of the upsides of writing a classification essay is that they are relatively easy to write.  The structure is simple.  In your introduction, you introduce the broader topic and briefly describe the categories.  Each of your supporting paragraphs will focus in-depth on one of the categories and provide examples of items that fall into the categories.

Clarity is probably the most important part of a classification essay.  Therefore, you want to use consistent criteria to define each of your categories, and then give examples of things that clearly fall into those categories.  If there are exceptions to your classification rules, which is always a possibility, do not address them until after you have established your categories.

Our examples can provide you with a great template to follow in writing your own classification essays.  Feel free to browse them for ideas and inspiration for your own writing!

Student Data Is Vital to the Student\'s
Differentiation-Supporting Data Research shows the importance of collecting and examining student data for determining a student's readiness, interest, learning profile and affect. Though each category speaks to different aspects of the student, an educational thread running through all of them is that the more data collected and examined, the more intimately we know the student, which means the more effectively we can adapt lessons to use the student's strengths and address his/her challenges. Student X is a good example of a student having pronounced strengths and abiding educational challenges that were defined by assessment and discussion. With each statement and response given by Student X, her strengths/challenges became better defined, more connections could be made between her formal learning experience and her uniqueness, and possible unique lessons became clearer. Though data collection and examination for Student X were far from comprehensive, even that brief experience gave a glimpse of the value and significance of data collection for effective education.

Seven people in a room: second version
People are selective in identifying traits and selection of others. It is very difficult to identify how many races exist especially looking at seven people in a room. The knowledge that different culture disagree on the number and definition of races; and the varied ways that race has been viewed historically, casts a doubt that races can be identified biologically. (James people, Garrick.B.pg 37). Race is part of how people identify themselves, this makes it important in a persons social identity. Such identities carry a great degree of racial pride that carries positive forcein some people.
