What is Conformity?

Conformity refers to the process by which individuals adjust their beliefs, behaviors, or attitudes to align with the expectations of a group or broader society. It appears across multiple academic disciplines, including social psychology, sociology, and literature, making it a versatile subject for coursework at both introductory and advanced levels. What makes conformity academically compelling is the tension it creates between the individual and the collective — a tension that touches on questions of identity, autonomy, and social control. Works like One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest and philosophical traditions such as Transcendentalism engage directly with this conflict, giving students rich textual material alongside empirical frameworks drawn from social psychology and social influence research.

Student papers on this topic approach conformity from several distinct angles. Some take a social-psychological perspective, examining how group dynamics and social influence shape individual actions. Others use literary analysis, exploring how characters in fiction are shaped or constrained by societal pressure. A smaller set applies the concept to specific cultural contexts, such as the use of steroids in baseball, treating conformity as a lens for understanding behavior within competitive environments. Papers also consider age as a variable affecting conformity, suggesting quantitative and observational methodologies appear alongside more qualitative approaches.

A strong essay on conformity requires a clearly scoped thesis that moves beyond simply defining the concept. Effective papers identify a specific context — a social setting, a literary work, or a documented case — and use it to argue something particular about why individuals conform or resist conformity. Evidence drawn from observable behavior, psychological theory, or textual analysis tends to carry the most weight. The most common pitfall is treating conformity as inherently negative; a nuanced essay acknowledges that conforming can serve legitimate social functions while still examining its costs to individual agency.

Strategic Management and Culture in the Bahamian Insurance Industry
The Bahamian insurance industry is divided into two main braches: one domestic, one captive and each operate without regard to the other, overseen by their own act of Parliament (Oxford, 2009). Within this field, around 100 companies are engaged in business, the bulk of them working as brokers, with just a few working as underwriters, working closely together when they do (Oxford, 2009). There appears to be a system of checks in place: agents aren't able to underwrite, and companies cannot engage in sales pitches to prospective customers directly (Oxford, 2009).

Reflective Analysis of a Fathers Nurturing Program Group Session
The group that I observed was one that was run by Sex and Love Addicts Anonymous, (S.L.A.A.). I participated in it as auxiliary observer. The groups taught me that All activities should be focused on the client him or herself and on treating this client as central rather than as instrument or peripheral to the process. The process should be catered around the client and the facilitator should (as Shulman (2005)) suggests be constantly attuned to eh client's needs. The first group was more sensitive to the client, but its lack of facilitator indicated to me the anarchy that can result when so skilled professional takes the helm. The two groups were almost totally polarized to one another in that the first too closely conformed to structure whilst the second transgressed it at its volition. Facilitators are needed, but the format needs to more flexible paying greater attention to client than to rules.

Architecture of Happiness: Why Aesthetic Ideals Change Over Time
Alain de Botton asks the very apt question in his text, The Architecture of Happiness, why it is that society constantly has shifting values about what it finds beautiful, positing this question, very simply: "Why do we change our minds about what we find beautiful?" (154) This is an important question as De Botton demonstrates that what we consider to be aesthetically pleasing swings from polarities which are difficult to predict, and which are subject to the influences of time: "Precedent forces us to suppose that later generations will one day walk around our houses with the same attitude of horror and amusement with which we now consider many of the possessions of the dead. They will marvel at our wallpaper and our sofas and laugh at aesthetic crimes to which we are impervious.
