What is Criticism?

Criticism as an academic topic appears across a wide range of disciplines, including literature, business, political science, history, and cultural studies. It functions both as a method — a structured way of evaluating ideas, texts, policies, or figures — and as a subject of inquiry in its own right. What makes it academically interesting is its dual nature: criticism can be a tool for advancing knowledge and improving institutions, or it can be examined as a social and rhetorical act shaped by ideology, power, and context. Courses in composition, cultural theory, organizational management, and political analysis all treat criticism as a concept worth understanding deeply.

The papers collected here reflect a genuinely broad range of approaches. Some take a comparative and rhetorical angle, examining different methods of criticism side by side. Others apply critical frameworks to specific figures or movements, such as assessments of political leadership, explorations of criticism and self-criticism within German Modernism, or evaluations of economic policy through a lens like McMillan's criticism of gradualism. Still others use criticism instrumentally, scrutinizing business strategy, competitive forces, organizational redesign, or professional standards in fields like accounting.

A strong essay on criticism begins with a clearly scoped thesis that identifies what kind of criticism is being examined and what standard of judgment is being applied. Evidence drawn from primary texts, historical records, or documented outcomes tends to carry the most weight. One common pitfall is conflating personal opinion with structured critical analysis — effective academic criticism requires explicit criteria and consistent application of those criteria throughout the argument.

Is America's Broken Healthcare System Fixable?
It is not an undisclosed reality that the health care system of the United States of America is the most expensive in the world. The American government spends almost two times as much per individual as compared to other advanced nation-states for achieving better health outcomes. However, they are neither better nor satisfactory and are much poorer in some cases. In addition to this, the residents of other developed countries (particularly Canadians and British) who are consistently loathed by rivals of "socialized" medicines communicate that they are greatly satisfied with their health care systems when compared to the citizens of America who are not.

Eisenstein's Montage Technique in the 1925 Film Strike
Creation of Concepts through the Combination of Images in "Strike" Sergei Eisenstein (1898 – 1948) was one of the most famous filmmakers of the early 20th Century. His formal training as an engineer and architect in St. Petersburg, as well as his Russian heritage and Marxist beliefs, greatly influenced his eventual career in filmmaking. One of Eisenstein's greatest contributions is the montage, consisting of images chosen arbitrarily and independently from the action presented for maximum impact rather than in chronological sequence. Eisenstein's first film, 1924's Strike, was a revolutionary application of this "montage of attractions" editing method in which Eisenstein propounded his beliefs about the Russian class warfare. The editing of Strike produced multiple montages by juxtaposing images to exert emotional impact. Due to his introduction of innovative editing to create emotionally impactful montages, Eisenstein is deemed one of the pioneers of cinema. Nevertheless, Eisenstein's use of montage has also been criticized. Overall, Eisenstein's work is widely regarded as foundational to much of the cinematic work to date.
