What is Government?

Government as an academic subject examines how political institutions acquire, distribute, and exercise power over citizens and territories. It appears across political science, public administration, economics, and law courses, drawing students into questions about how authority is structured, how policy is made, and how states relate to individuals and other nations. The topic is academically rich because it sits at the intersection of theory and practice — abstract questions about legitimacy and power connect directly to concrete issues like budgeting, regulation, and constitutional design. Papers on this subject engage with documents such as George Washington's Farewell Address, specific constitutional frameworks like the Texas Constitution, and institutional structures such as the judicial branch, giving students a wide range of primary material to analyze.

The archived papers approach government from several distinct angles. Comparative analysis is common, with writers examining government-business relations across different national models, contrasting authoritarian capitalism with other economic systems, or assessing how policy subsystems such as iron triangles and subgovernments function. Case-study approaches appear frequently as well, focusing on specific events — the Mexican Drug War, the Gulf oil spill response, the stimulus bill debate — to evaluate how governments respond under pressure. Policy-oriented papers address areas like public budget cycles, e-government implementation in Saudi Arabia, tariff authority, and child protection measures.

A strong essay on government grounds its thesis in a specific institutional mechanism, policy decision, or comparative framework rather than making broad claims about power in general. Evidence drawn from constitutional texts, legislative records, and documented policy outcomes carries more weight than generalized assertions. The most common pitfall is treating "government" as a monolithic actor — effective essays distinguish carefully between branches, levels, and competing interests within governing systems to build a precise, defensible argument.

William Howard Taft's life before the Supreme Court
William Howard Taft was completely unique as a Chief Justice in that he was the only former president to serve in that position. He was originally from Cincinnati, Ohio and had graduated from law school in 1880. He later served as a prosecuting attorney and a federal judge, although most of his experience after 1901 was in executive position, including Secretary of War in 1903-08 and president in 1909-13.

Globalization Has Greatly Weakened the Traditional Way
The process of Globalization has greatly weakened the traditional way in which governments functioned. The ever increasing economic integration has had an impact on the autonomy and power of existing national governments and given greater access to other non state political and economic actors. (Steger, 2004) Every human order in the past has lived off a shared image of the world view that served to plant the feet of its members tightly in time and space. Yet none actually ever dreamt of linking together the oceans and continents and the people who lived in them. Each of these individual world views only emerged after military defeats suffered in modern Europe. These world views included global acquisition of territory, resources and subjects in the name of empires and the will to unite the world through fascism and Marxism. They indeed left permanent marks on the lives of people, institutions and systems but they failed to accomplish their mission. A new world view was born from among these and it is significantly different from any of the previous orders. This new world view was termed as the ‘Global Civil Society'. (Herkenrath, 2007) (Edwards,2009)

Political Philosophies When We Talk
When we talk about the political theories of the modern world then two names are of prime importance, John Locke and Karl Marx. These two philosophers have greatly worked on the political conditions of the modern era and it is impossible to sum up the work of such great philosophers in a few pages but their concluded perspectives are discussed below (Tully, 1993). John Locke who is popularly known as the father of Liberalism has greatly worked for the political philosophies of the modern era. According to Locke people are born independent therefore their liberalism is natural and the ruler or and government cannot bound them under any restriction that is against their basic rights.
