What is High School?

High school represents one of the most examined institutions in educational studies, sitting at the intersection of adolescent development, curriculum policy, and social dynamics. Students across education, sociology, psychology, and composition courses are regularly asked to write about high school because it serves as a concrete, familiar setting for exploring broader questions about equity, opportunity, and identity. The experiences and structures found in high school illuminate how social systems shape individual outcomes, making it a productive subject for both personal reflection and policy-level analysis.

The papers archived on this topic span a wide range of approaches. Some take a policy and program focus, examining issues like vocational course offerings, sports program development, and federal and state relations in education. Others address specific student populations, including Hispanic dropout rates and the struggles of Asian ESL students, using a case-study or demographic lens. Comparative approaches appear in work contrasting high school with college life, while narrative and reflective essays draw on personal experience to examine how high school shapes individual identity and worldview. Social dynamics such as cliques also receive attention alongside urgent issues like school shootings.

A strong essay on high school succeeds by committing to a specific, arguable claim rather than broadly surveying the institution. Whether the focus is a policy question, a student population, or a personal experience, the thesis should identify a clear problem or insight and support it with relevant evidence — data, research, or well-developed narrative detail. A common pitfall is staying too general; grounding the argument in concrete examples or a defined context keeps the analysis focused and persuasive.

Interview with Ralph about reckless driving and tragedy
Deviant Interview This interview took place in the second week of March 2012, on the front porch of a house where "Ralph" lives with his parents. The parents were out of town and I ran a digital recorder after promising him his real name would not be used. My note taking leaves a lot to be desired so he agreed to the digital recording of the interview. Ralph (not his real name) was two years out of high school, taking some online courses and working part time at a restaurant. He was hoping to get his community college two-year degree. A big gray tabby cat sat on his lap and the sight of him petting that cat made the picture seem very mellow and innocent, although the deviant acts he and his two friends were involved with were not mellow and not innocent.

Reducing recidivism through prison rehabilitation and reform strategies
Abstract Generally, recidivism in the justice system context entails the tendency amongst former prisoners or criminals to go back to their criminal lives mainly upon release from prison. In this case, recidivism rates are measured by having a look at the number of former prisoners re-incarcerated within a given time period. It can be noted that in basic terms, high recidivism rates are in most cases associated with increased costs of re-offender arrest and prosecution. Other related costs in this case relate to public safety. In this text, I will concern myself with prison life and the approaches/strategies to bring down the rate of recidivism upon a prisoner's release from jail.

Second language oral production in high school CLIL contexts
1 Introduction This study is motivated by theoretical and pedagogical interests: to inform instructional design intended to integrate language and content and to explore how form and meaning intersect in SLA. Both interests draw on an extensive body of research that encompasses theory and practice underlying three different yet related frameworks and lines of inquiry: content-based language teaching, form-focused instruction and attention and awareness in SLA. All three of these areas are linked by a concern with the intersection of form and meaning in second language classrooms. Content-based language instruction was originally inspired as an alternative to traditional approaches to language teaching that favored form over meaning. Form-focused instruction brought language form to the foreground when meaning-focused, content-based approaches relegated the learning of language form to an incidental role. Research in attention and awareness has explored a focus on form and meaning as internal learner processes. The research questions guiding the present study were motivated by an interest in these areas.

Joseph Hallinan's analysis of America's prison-industrial complex and profit
The paper critically reviews the book Going Up the River: Travels in a Prison Nation by J. Hallinan. Hallinan argues that the correctional system today is totally bankrupt and corrupt, as it has changed its emphasis from rehabilitating prisoners into punishing and making a profit out of them. The paper looks at some of the controversial and weak points of the book but agrees with its thesis.
