In 1995, Infinity Broadcasting agreed to settle FCC claims against Stern in a $1.7 million dollar settlement. By 2004, according to the Center for Public Integrity, the FCC had levied over $3.95 million in fines against indecency on the radio, and half of that total was levied against Stern and Infinity. Still further, the FCC has issued over $1.9 million in fines to shows syndicating the Stern program (Dunbar, 2004).

Perhaps Stern's most notable infraction was the 2004 fines, totaling $495,000 against 18 Clear Channel stations airing a single program of the Howard Stern Show. The fines were the first on record by the FCC citing more than one infraction of FCC regulations during a single show. Clear Channel Communications had pulled the Stern show from six stations in February of that year, after complaints of a show involving sexual descriptions and racist remarks. The sexual content cited in the infraction….

Howard Stern
The Female Perception of Howard Stern

On the surface, Howard Stern would appear to be a very obvious and hostile enemy to the state of modern feminism. And with respect to the way that women view him in general, we may reflexively be inclined to presume that the predominance of males in his radio talk show listening audience is a significant indicator of how women must surely feel about the shock jock. His sexually frank, frequently profane and often decidedly chauvinistic perspectives are a frequent basis for Stern's radio show programs. Indeed, he has become noted and famous for the controversy which often surrounds his unflinching sexual objectification of women and the denigrating comments that accompany conversations on the subject of male-female relationships. However, these assumptions are not sufficient to understand how women truly feel about the satellite radio star. hile a significant portion of the population does feel exactly….

Howards Stern
I am the King of All Media."

-Howard Stern

Howard Stern, ordained as the King of All Media, is definitely one of the most popular figures of the media world. The popularity that he enjoys has not been overshadowed by the controversial topics of his radio show.

Stern's influence on America has come to represent a major part of the U.S. demographic, which holds one of the lowest literacy rates of all industrial countries, as his syndicated radio show receives one of the highest set of ratings around the world. His brand of in your face topics and humor has influenced a generation of people not just in the U.S., but also around the world.

This essay will discuss the historical influence of Howard Stern on American society. e will explore both the good and bad opinions that are shared about the media giant and how he changed the manner in which we….

On the other hand, argumentation in this sense can go either way, because we are all entitled to ask ourselves: who is the overlord tracing the moral rules by which we need to abide? Isn't it a little too much to credit the Federal Communications Committee with this role?
In my opinion, Howard Stern is nothing more than one of the different expressions of society itself, one of the many forms in which it manifests itself. The fact that there are so many listeners to his show means that he is covering the interests of a large category of radio consumers and this should be a clue towards FCC's actions.

Sirius and XM Satellite Radio
Satellite radio has emerged in the past few years as the hot new trend in broadcasting. Operating similar to DirecTV, satellite radio companies bounce their signals off satellites to beam high-quality digital service coast-to-coast, offering exclusive ad-free programming. Satellite radio offers listeners the opportunity to hear any show anywhere in the United States, combining the benefits of premium quality sound and convenience when traveling on the road. Research indicates that similar to the way FM radio grew against dominant AM radio, satellite radio is becoming known for "edgier" alternative programming (McCarthy, at http://www.usatoday.com/money/media/2004-10-6-radio-compare_x.htm). The entire satellite radio industry is currently made up only two companies, XM Radio, which started broadcasting in 2001 and has 2.5 million customers, and Sirius, with 600,000 subscribers since going live in 2002. This paper will offer a comparative analysis of the two companies and a general overview of the satellite….

It is too early to gauge the results of this initiative, although early results of 1 million downloads in two weeks are positive (Kharif, 2009).
Another competitor is Internet radio. This industry is fragmented, with hundreds if not thousands of operators. It has many of the same content advantages of satellite radio, including the ability to offer a wide range of formats. It is at a content disadvantage, however, because few if any Internet radio stations can afford the high-end talent that satellite radio has established. However, their cost structures are much lower as well, meaning that they can offer their product for free. As of 2006, an estimated 30 million Americans listened to Internet radio each week (Prince, 2006). The industry is at a disadvantage, however, in terms of its ability to measure its listenership. This in turn makes it difficult for Internet radio providers to compete for advertising….

Dante's Inferno
PAGES 3 WORDS 1071

Hell
Aligheiri Dante's "Inferno" is the first of three books in Dante's classical work "The Divine Comedy." The "Inferno" pursues Dante's journey through Hell on his path to discovering God. He begins at the bottom Hell in sin, and must fight his way to the top through a variety of adventures, where lovely Beatrice awaits him in Paradise. In modern times, Dante's work is still quite applicable, because there are many people who deserve to reside in Hell. Instead of nine circles, today there are three -- High Hell, Middle Hell, and Deepest Hell. High Hell is reserved for those who have sinned, but not critically.

The punishment in High Hell would be similar to Dante's labyrinth, but a great beast would not guard it. Howard Stern would guard it, and his continual and never-ending comments would be audible throughout the labyrinth. There is no exit from this labyrinth, and there….

Nevertheless, the Thalberg school district maintained that her appearance on the show and participation in the contest exposed her students to inappropriate subject matter, notwithstanding the fact that it would have been virtually impossible for second grade students to hear a broadcast requiring special receivers and a monthly paid subscription service (WFSB 2008).
Ms. Jarry absolutely rejected any such suggestion but resigned under the pressure simply to preserve her teaching career because she lacked the financial resources to challenge the ultimatum in formal litigation, given the vast resources of the school district. By resigning "voluntarily" Ms. Jarry effectively relinquished any rights to dispute the school district's characterization of her appearance but, under the circumstances, she felt she had little choice in the matter.

" The subject describes how his mother also adamantly refused to consent to the use of Novocain or any other anesthetic when he visited the dentist (despite his pleas and pleas from the dentist) because of her distrust of "chemicals."
There is likely a direct connection between the subject's development of a highly abrasive and uncontrollable on-air persona and the degree to which the subject's control over basic aspects of his life was denied to him throughout his formative years (Casement, 1998; Mitchell & Black, 1995). More specifically, the subject was denied the right to express himself and he was often forced to abide by very conservative rules of proper conduct both in the home and also outside the home, such as by his mother's repeated warning that he was her "representative" outside the home. The self that developed seems to reflect both the explicit absorption of certain ideas from his….

The majority opinion would be written by the historically conservative
Justice Scalia. His response is characterized by Stout (2009), who reports
that "in layman's terms, 'arbitrary and capricious' action by a lower court
or an agency means the action was totally unreasonable and in disregard of
the facts. Justice Scalia wrote that the F.C.C. has the power under law to
turn to more aggressive enforcement, if it wishes, and that it need not
present empirical evidence of harm done to children by over-the-air dirty
language. Indeed, he wrote, such empirical evidence is unattainable in any
event." (Stout, 1) This sites the one aspect of the FCC approach that may
be characterized as positive, which is that it awards it sufficient power
to restrain broadcasting excesses.
Recommendations for a New Policy:
Beyond this, the policy should generally be regarded as negative for
creating a test of indecency that is indefensible. A new policy would
redefine obscenity in specific and concrete terms based on the availability
of….

Future of Radio What Is

He doesn't mention Apple's iPod, iPod Touch, and iPad, but those devices also pose a challenge for traditional radio broadcasting. People can "…select music that suits their individual tastes and many have wider repositories of music in their own libraries" -- thanks to the iTunes and similar services -- than are offered on the playlists of radio broadcasters (Picard, p. 1).
Moreover, Satellite and Internet radio are offering "hundreds of choices of highly focused music formats," Picard continues, making radio "…a less relevant platform" for music and entertainment than it was previously (p. 1). Besides using Satellite radio -- and being willing to pay for a service that specializes in exactly the music genre listeners prefer -- users are downloading podcasts on a number of topics that interest them, Picard explains. The problems for radio resulting from these alternative audio choices are "compounded" in the United States due to the….

Five Forces Analysis: What is your industry definition? Why?

Snapple is competing in an almost perfectly competitive market, with a high degree of competitive rivalry and few barriers to entry.

The threat of the entry of new competitors: The thereat of entry of new competitors is extremely high. Snapple sells a beverage that can be easily replicated using iced tea or fruit juice. Although it markets itself as a unique natural beverage, people have been making fruit drinks and other iced drinks for a long time, and could easily carry such drinks with them in their own containers. Local brands as well as national brands could compete with Snapple in almost every subset of the market.

The intensity of competitive….

Merchants of Cool
On February 27, 2001 the Public Broadcasting System's (PBS) program Frontline aired The Merchants of Cool. The program examines the efforts of corporate America to exploit the teenage market. At the time of broadcast there were 32 million teenagers in the United States, the largest generation ever, spending 100 billion dollars annually on their own while their parents spent another 50 billion on them. This ability to impact the economy has made this generation the most studied in history. Robert Mc Chesney, media critic, has characterized the behavior of corporate America toward this youth market as analogous to the British Empire's takeover of Africa. I believe a valid comparison can be made between these two otherwise unconnected events.

Briefly, the earliest British colonies on the west coast of Africa were dedicated to creating wealth through the trade of slaves. Gold and ivory also attracted investors to the continent.….

Hate Radio," Patricia J. illiams comments on the growing trend of "anything goes" talk radio, led by radio personalities who seem determined to anger as many people as possible, and who cater to an audience of people empowered to say almost anything, no matter how prejudiced or ill-informed about other groups of people.
She describes how she first became aware of this type of media broadcast. In 1991 she accidentally heard two radio personalities commenting about George . Bush's nomination of Clarence Thomas to the Supreme Court. Their view seemed to be that Bush deliberately nominated a poorly qualified Black American candidate knowing he wouldn't be confirmed. He could then place someone there "with intelligence," presumably a non-black. They made up a new pejorative label: "Blafricans," which eliminates the reference to the American entirely.

At first she thought this exchange was unusual, and she wrote the conversation down. As an isolated….

Stern Hu himself cannot actually exert much control from the Chinese prison where he is being held on charges of espionage. The Australian firm he worked for however, Rio Tinto, has been very vocal -- especially through Hu's former boss John Dougall -- in its attempts to get the federal government and Prime Minister Rudd in particular to act quickly to free Hu. This would require heavy Australian pressure on the Chinese government, adding tension to one of Australia's biggest trading relationships (a relationship which, ironically, Hu helped to create and solidify).
The Mass media in both countries has not been helpful here but instead has exacerbated the issue, making it largely one of nationality. Especially in China, where the government and culture is still largely under the control of the Communist Party, this creates a great deal additional emotion surrounding the issue, requiring foreign policy ministers on both sides….
