What is Information Systems?

Information systems sits at the intersection of technology, management, and organizational behavior, making it a central subject in business, computer science, and public administration programs. The field examines how organizations collect, process, store, and distribute data to support decision-making and operational efficiency. Its academic appeal lies in the way it bridges purely technical concerns—software, networks, infrastructure—with human and organizational questions about knowledge management, process design, and strategic alignment. Because nearly every modern organization depends on digital systems, courses across disciplines from accounting to supply chain management treat information systems as foundational.

The papers in this collection reflect a wide range of approaches. Some take a case-study format, examining how structural changes in specific organizations—such as centralized systems transformations—affect performance. Others adopt evaluative or diagnostic angles, analyzing failures in information systems and information technologies or assessing technology's impact on environmental sustainability. Policy-oriented and comparative work also appears, covering e-government, e-learning, e-commerce, and ERP implementations, as well as the distinct challenges facing developing countries. Ethics in computing and the role of information systems in areas like accounting, sales, and military supply support further illustrate how broadly the topic extends.

A strong essay on information systems requires a clearly scoped thesis that connects a specific system, process, or technology to a measurable organizational or social outcome. Evidence drawn from real implementations, documented case analyses, or established management frameworks tends to carry the most weight. One common pitfall is treating the technology itself as the focus rather than examining how it interacts with organizational processes, human behavior, and decision-making—the relationships between systems and the people who use them are almost always where the most substantive arguments live.

Groupware Implementing Groupware: Comparing Costs and Benefits
There are many varying definitions of groupware yet all share a common attribute or characteristic of enabling collaboration, sharing knowledge and providing work teams with greater insight and intelligence into operations. The intent of groupware is to create a scalable, reliable and agile platform for sharing information and knowedlge, both tacit and implicit, throughout distributed enterprises (Kline, 2001). Best practices in groupware encompass interdepartmental, intradivisional and enterprise-wide integration of content and knowledge management processes and systems (Corbitt, Martz, 2003). The benefits of such a pervasive platform for information and knowledge sharing has shown to deliver quantifiable gains in corporate-wide productivity and performance, leading to greater profitability as well (Lukosch, 2004) (Meroño-Cerdán, 2008). With so many benefits and contributions of groupware, it's surprising that more organizations don't adopt these series of technologies to attain their corporate-wide information and knowledge management strategies. In reality implementing groupware is exceptionally difficult because it forces people in companies to change how they work (Chen, Hao, 2002) (Ellis, Gibbs, Rein, 1991). It takes an exceptional level of trust in the implementation and leaders of the implementation to make groupware projects translate into long-term change within any enterprise (Corbitt, Martz, 2003). The technology is the easy part; getting people to change is hard. This paper compares the costs and benefits of groupware, deciding if it is worth it as an enterprise strategy.

Does Social Networking People Make Stronger Connections World Isolate People Real World Contact?
Social networks are creating a paradox of loneliness in society., While the founders of these networks often proclaims they are egalitarianism, research shows they replicate the cultural biases and taxonomies of social groups that exist in the real world. The implications of loneliness have more to do with the focus on how to grow social networks to be truly inclusive, not gated communities of those with similar interest and those also wanted to portray their lives as perfect.
