This paper reviews what constitutes a learning organization; why it is a controversial way of structuring employee-management relations at a firm; and surmises some of the benefits that can come from using the model. It concludes with an assessment of 'the learning organization's' value in today's global economy.

These characteristics are then utilized in a qualitative case study approach, which assesses the presence of learning organisation characteristics in order to identify barriers to organisational learning. In the globalized environment of today, organizations must continually learn and adapt. This is particularly true, as organizations are now under intense competition from firms outside their geographic region.

The modern day business climate is more challenging and dynamic and it forces the economic agents to seek alternative sources of strategic advantages. One example in this sense is represented by the enhancement of the emphasis placed on supporting learning and the continuous development of the organization of learning.
