Disaster and Crisis Prevention and Mitigation – Annotated Bibliography This is a project outline and Annotated Bibliography for Business Continuity during Crises. The pre-crisis portion diagrams the steps regarding corporate processes to management of issues to prevention planning. The outline also sets forth steps to be taken during the crisis by the crisis management team, internal communications team and external media team. The outline then delineates a post-crisis response dealing with continuing assessment and refinement of corporate planning for anticipated crises. Finally, this project sets forth an Annotated Bibliography of scholarly and practical sources for fleshing out the pre-crisis, mid-crisis and post-crisis steps.

Throughout history drilling has been very dangerous activity. Thousands of miners die from mining accidents each year, especially in the processes oil and gas drilling. According to the International Labor Organization (ILO), more than 2 million people die from occupational accidents or work – related diseases every year. Conservative global estimates suggest 270 million occupational accidents and 160 million cases of occupational diseases occur on an annual basis. Half of these deaths may be caused by exposure to hazardous chemicals. Information on immigrant morbidity and occupational fatality rates is scarce. Few countries disaggregate data that permits analysis on occupational health issues. The U.S. alone reported 3.7 million cases of occupational injury and illnesses in 2008. Of these, 71 % occurred in service providing industries; the remainder in goods producing industries (BLS 2009).

The organization where I worked from April 24, 2012 to June 29, 2012 was U.S Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). Created in 2003, it is the main investigative body of the U.S Department of Homeland Security Investigation. It is a federal law enforcement agency whose main responsibility includes executing the immigration and custom laws of the United States to protect the country and to ensure the public security. The detailed chart of the structure of the organization is attached in the Appendix A. ICE has a divisional organizational structure. It is headed by the Director who is appointed by the President of U.S and approved by the Senate. The Director directly reports to the Secretary of Homeland Security. There are six leadership offices that are located within the office of the Director. These offices are headed by Assistant Directors and include Office of Public Affairs

The nursing student or professional nurse would be well-served with participation on an interdisciplinary team. Such participation can lead to establishing leadership and a culture of safety that might not otherwise be established. Additionally, nurses who actively participate and who seek to establish a culture of safety are likely to be more respected and listened to throughout their careers.
