The distinction between both is that whilst Oliver is a description and rendering o poverty and the abuse of societal class discrimination at its worst, Great Expectations journey beyond that and has the mature character reflect on his experiences and discover that perhaps the poor man is no worse off – and often indeed better than the wealthy. In great Expectations it is Pip and the convict who turn out to be the heroes, whilst the upper class gentlemen are parodied. Great Expectation is, therefore, a parody on genteel British society. Both books decry the abuse and injustice of a 'civilized' class system, particularly the injustice that is doled to the most vulnerable members of society. Great Expectations, however, goes beyond in questioning whether the wealthy are indeed better characters than the poor,simple and illiterate and it concludes with a determined 'no.'
