What is Promotion?

Promotion is a core concept in business education, examined across marketing, management, human resources, and healthcare administration courses. It covers two distinct but related meanings: the advancement of individuals within organizations and the strategic communication used to bring products and services to market. Both dimensions make promotion academically rich because they sit at the intersection of organizational behavior, consumer psychology, and competitive strategy. Courses in marketing management, sales management, and human resources regularly ask students to analyze how promotion functions as both a people-management tool and a market-facing activity.

The papers in this collection reflect that breadth of interpretation. Some take a product-focused angle, building advertising plans and distribution strategies for specific goods such as TruFocal Eyeglasses or Redhook Ale entering the Nigerian market. Others examine promotion through a talent management or human resources lens, exploring how collaborative workplaces and effective sales management shape career advancement. Healthcare-oriented papers extend the concept further, addressing the promotion of professional roles such as advanced nurse practitioners or the accreditation of public health nutritionists. Case study and literature review formats appear throughout, grounding arguments in real company examples and industry data.

A strong essay on promotion should establish a clear, narrow thesis early — either focusing on external marketing promotion or internal career advancement, rather than trying to cover both. Evidence drawn from specific market conditions, consumer behavior data, or organizational case studies carries the most weight. A common pitfall is treating promotion as a generic process; the strongest work connects promotional decisions directly to a defined target audience, a measurable objective, or a specific competitive context.

Human Resource Planning: Training, Succession & Talent
HRP looks into the requirement of human resources by an organization in order to attain its strategic objectives and goals. Bulla and Scott (1994) has defined HRP as the process for conforming that the human resource requirements of an organization are identified and plans made for fulfilling those needs. HRP is built on the premise that employees of an organization constitutes its greatest strategic resource and it is generally concerned with aligning resources with that of business needs in the long term. HRP deals with human resource needs in quantitative as well as qualitative terms. This implies meeting two very fundamental questions which are ‘the number of people' and ‘attributes required to be present in those people'. Besides it also addresses broader issues impacting the manner in which people are recruited and their respective careers developed with a view to augmenting organizational effectiveness. Hence, it can contribute in a meaningful way in strategic human resource management.

Angiomax Pricing Strategy and Hospital Adoption Plan
Given the concepts and frameworks as defined by Dolan and Gourville in their accumulated research on pricing, it is clear the Angiomax product will be able to sustain a significantly higher price over time. The overall premise of The Medicines Company is based on taking products that have not succeeded in the market, and re-introducing them, often at a higher price. This strategy works out exceptionally well as it often yields significantly higher gross margins. Heparin was most likely priced to re-cover Research & Development (R&D) expenses in addition to ensuring there was just enough gross margin for the distribution channel to take the product on. This approach to pricing the product ensured it would be seen as a commodity, as the accumulated research of Dolan and Gourville confirm. While there are a multiplicity of factors behind a pharmaceutical drug succeeding or failing, the most potent of all differentiators is price and the message it sends into the market. Based on the need to significantly differentiate Angiomax from Heparin at a quality level, the price will need to be higher. In addition, there are the costs associated with the re-marketing, re-positioning and support of the product's new messaging, which need to be covered with the new pricing model. Yet at the most fundamental level the need exists for Angiomax to occupy a more differentiated and high-value segment of the overall market. It will also be critical to attain a price/value relationship in the product to ensure tis success as well. Due to all of these factors, its price will be higher than Heparin by significant amount.
