What is Technology?

Technology as an academic topic spans nearly every discipline, from business and education to law enforcement and the arts. Students in management, information systems, education, engineering, and communications courses regularly write about it because technological change reshapes how institutions operate, how people learn, and how society organizes itself. The topic is academically interesting precisely because it sits at the intersection of technical capability and human consequence, forcing writers to examine not just what a technology does but what it means for individuals, organizations, and policy.

The papers archived here reflect a wide range of approaches. Some take an applied, industry-specific angle, examining how technology functions within finance, hotel services, or human resources. Others adopt a comparative or evaluative stance, weighing the pros and cons of developments like tablet devices displacing laptops or the internet causing more harm than good. Policy and security-oriented papers look at tools such as closed-circuit television in law enforcement or internal and external security frameworks. A classroom-focused cluster addresses how incorporating technology affects learning, including among elementary school students with special needs. This variety shows that writers approach the subject through case studies, cost-benefit analysis, and sector-specific investigation.

A strong essay on technology picks a specific context rather than treating the subject in the abstract. A focused thesis might address how a particular technology changes a defined process, role, or outcome. Evidence drawn from data, organizational case studies, or documented communication patterns tends to carry the most weight. The most common pitfall is writing at too broad a level, describing technology in general terms without anchoring claims in concrete examples or a clearly bounded argument.

Dual coding theory and its applications to reading instruction
Dual Coding Theory (DCT) was originally developed for memory research. The basic notion is that images and words influence memory differently. DCT has been applied to reading and has been used to improve reading programs. The assertion is that learning to read a new word is more efficient if more than one part of the brain is activated, by paring verbal and nonverbal codes. Verbal code would be language in any form; nonverbal codes are tangible objects, pictures, feelings, and events. If one code is forgotten, the second code can serve as a backup during word retrieval. By paring written words, pronunciations, pictures, and experience we are focusing on all levels of processing in DCT which fosters learning. The following paper describes the basic elements of DCT.

Dracula and Twilight: Gothic tradition versus modern consumer culture
Dracula is a far more traditional Gothic novel in the classic sense than the four books of the Twilight series, in which Bella Swan and her vampire lover Edward Cullen never even fully consummate their relationship until they are married in the third book Eclipse, and Bella does not finally get her wish to become a vampire until the fourth and final book Breaking Dawn. Far from being Edward's victim, or used as a pawn and discarded, she is eager to leave her dull, empty middle class life behind and become part of the Cullen vampire family

Nuclear power as a solution to climate change and fossil fuel depletion
There are a plethora of reasons in which alternative fuels are becoming increasingly desirable as potential power source for everyday consumption in the future. One such reason is that fossil fuels are non-renewable resources that will eventually be exhausted in regards to the feasibility of extracting these resources. It is not necessarily that non-renewable resources will be totally consumed, however the remaining reserves of these resources is increasingly hard to extract and the price of extraction will eventually exceed the costs associated with alternatives. For example, oil will eventually reach a point in which the costs associated with extracting it from hard to get to reserves will be more expensive than alternative fuels, such as wind, solar, and nuclear.
